“Here and Far Away” is The Turino’s first studio album and I’ll say that anyone who listens will be very pleasantly surprised to hear this. If you’ve thought that all “old-time” music sounds the same then this is the album that will change your mind. First, you won’t find yet another thread-bare version of the same tune you’ve heard a hundred other bands do. All the tunes are freshly composed delights from both Tom and Matt Turino. There is a wide range of styles represented on this CD, but it all focuses on the ability of this father and son duo to create something that sounds fresh and new. With the addition of J.B. Faires on bass, this is music that will just make you feel good to listen. Some of the cuts are traditional in nature, while pieces such as Jane’s Birthday, Clear Light, and Urbana Barn Dance and Scavenger’s Delight are old-time ensemble at its very best.
If you’re interested in where clawhammer banjo’s future lies, you need to give a Cuiver River Shiver a close listen. J.B. Faires’ bass is absolutely stunning in this interplay of banjo, guitar, and upright bass. The upright provides the shiver portion for me!
I would be remiss if I didn’t point out the brilliant and beautiful fiddle work done here by Matt Turino. Crissa Ma Sissa, penned by Matt is a great example of how a tune can be both sweet and edgy simultaneously. He aptly demonstrates the power of playing old time infused with lots of other influences, and he’s sure to be an inspiration for lots of players in the future.
Be prepared for this one to stay at the top of your play list for a LONG time.
