Album Notes

Judy Woodall and Muletrain are the Real Thing. Not too much polish. And that's a good thing. The sound comes out as country-sounding, but that's not a genre-thing. That's because it comes from the country. Deep in it - the mountains of it - mountains of layers of dirt washin' over it all. There are fiddles, and mandolins, and electric guitars, and trumpets, and harmony singers, and accordians. There is gospel, and jazz, and old-timey sounding country, and very modern sounding songs. So don't generalize here. It's just music, made from the soul and burnt down. Trampled and stamped.

Upbeat mountain swing !

In addition to vocals, Judy Woodall plays the synth, the cornet, the ocarina, acoustic, electric and Tremolo guitars. Her musical style has been described as mountain swing, which is a blend of blues, bluegrass and traditional folk. Judy was born and raised in West Virginia and her Appalachian culture and Baptist background are incorporated into her songs. Judy is joined by a variety of talented friends and musicians who contribute additional vocals and create the diverse rich sounds found on this fourteen-track collection. Banjos, mandolin, pedal steel, harmonica, organs and upright bass are some of the many instruments used. Judy writes visual lyrics and is a natural storyteller. Her music is organic, one can picture Judy and her pals on a back porch happily playing their tunes but in fairness her songs are more polished then an improvisational jam outdoors. The title track 'Black Pony' includes cantering vocals that trot along with fine fiddles, an accenting accordion and the cornet. 'Come On Over' flows on inviting instrumentation and dueling vocals.
