notes

Ten Thousand Mornings is a live collection of a dozen songs by some of Peter Mulvey's favorite songwriters. Mulvey brings the collection full circle; to record this album, he returned to his old stomping ground-- the subway stations of Boston, Massachusetts. Innovative interpretations of songs by artists as diverse as Elvis Costello, Gillian Welch, and Marvin Gaye, along with Mulvey's ferocious guitar playing and intensely inspired performances, result in a must have album by one of the most dynamic performers playing today. With very special guests including Chris Smither, Erin McKeown, and Jennifer Kimball.

  • Unforgettable, in every way

Few artists on the pop/folk scene can touch Peter Mulvey's astonishing guitar work and impressive way with a lyric. All the tunes on TEN THOUSAND MORNINGS are covers, but that doesn't matter a lick. Mulvey takes each one and - through his incredible playing and expressive, intuitive singing - makes it his own, whether it's a song by the Beatles, Elvis Costello, Randy Newman (the creepy, seemingly "M" inspired "In Germany Before the War") or an old chestnut like "Comes Love". Standouts include rousing versions of "Two Janes", "Stranded in a Limousine", the truly lovely "Running Up the Stairs", and the closing track, a masterfully complex rendition of Dar William's "The Ocean". The kicker: all of the cuts were recorded live in a Somerville, MA T-station, with its ambient noises providing wonderful atmosphere behind Mulvey's gruff but pliable voice, his hot guitar work, and lilting harmony from female guest vocalists. Among Mulvey's albums, TEN THOUSAND MORNINGS is the most unique and a small masterpiece, making it a terrifc addition to anyone's folk library.
