Album Notes

The Muses are a wonderful blend of voice and instrument that you won't find anywhere else. Tanya Brody and Matthew Gurnsey play 10 instruments between the two of them. Tanya is just as likely to strum the guitar or hit the hammered dulcimer as she is to pluck the harp. Matt is as happy playing his concertina as he is the bowed psaltery or will rattle away at the bones or toot a pennywhistle. They also have a mandolin, an acoustic bass and a Bodhran, all of which both can play. Add to this their wonderful vocal harmonies and you have an act well worth listening to.

The Muses travel all over the country playing at Scottish Games, Renaissance Festivals, Folk Festivals, libraries, colleges and other venues. Make sure you check out the web page to see when they'll be playing near you.

Both Tanya and Matt have been performing since their youth. They have each sung in various choirs and madrigal groups as well as a great deal of time spent treading the boards both in school and professionally.

When they met they realized that it was a match made in heaven, both musically and romantically. Their strong passion both in their music and for each other comes across in their playing, whether you're listening to an upbeat tune or a slow love ballad. Specializing in Irish and Scottish music, these two bring a sense of fun and play to the stage along with their professionalism.

Tramps and Hawkers is the debut album from The Muses, Tanya Brody and Matthew Gurnsey. The husband and wife team have created a wonderful mix of traditonal and new songs including Gypsy Hawk written by Matt, the traditional Band O' Shearers jazzed up a bit, and Tom Waits' The Briar and The Rose performed in a beautiful accapella arrangement. Tanya and Matt both play multiple instruments on this album showing their versatility as well as their skill. This album is a must in anyone's collection.

The Muses play with a passion and brilliance that is sure to be enjoyed by all.

Picked this up when browsing CDBaby, and I'm very glad I did. Lovely arrangements and voices, some of the prettiest traditional folk I've heard in a long time. Good selection of songs, too. I've been listening to it repeatedly.

The way Celtic is supposed to sound!

(from www.renaissancechic.com) I must say, "Tramps and Hawkers" is quite a strange title for an album as beautiful as this, but Brody and Gurnsey never fail to deliver the Scottish and Irish goods. Their version of the traditional Scottish drinking song "Health to the Company' is top-notch. Tanya's vocals are perfectly angelic and Matt's vocals have just the right amount of a Scottish lilt to them to make the song an authentic Celtic ballad. Other note-worthy tracks include "Band of Shearers" (my favorite track), "Leatherwing Bat", and "Nonesuch". They just don't write or play songs like this anymore...pick this acoustic gem up if you need a CD for cozy listening at home or...I guess cozy listening at home is enough....or pick it up simply if you're a Celtic music fan. This Celtic music fan recommends it for sure."
