Intoxicating and sophisticated, the lyrical style and musicality of Swedish-American recording artist TC reaches a new crescendo with the release of her latest CD, Flicker.
In her life and music, TC embraces her Swedish origins. Also known as Therese Brewitz, she offers a pleasing crossover between regional folk melodies and contemporary pop, singing both in English and her native language.
TC sees Flicker as her "coming out" in terms of her maturity as a performer and confidence as an artist. This new compilation spanned two years of intense, collaborative work with producer/composer Chris Houston. The piano and full-band production was recorded at the legendary Fantasy Studios. With this album, the soulful songwriting and beautiful piano accompaniments distinguish TC's true musical uniqueness.
Stylistically, she's been compared to Norah Jones and Regina Spector, but TC can't be labeled so simply. Personally, she's moved by songwriters like David Gray, Rufus Wainright, Heather Nova, and Tori Amos. She also admires the vocal athleticism of Duffy and Bjork. Recently, TC's found new fuel in alternative rock and pop bands such as Thriving Ivory, Killers, The Fray, Keane, All American Rejects and her favorite discovery, Muse. She also reveres the raw and rugged topography and climate of her Scandinavian homeland. Iceland is an especially favored vacation, and her lyrics often reflect the elemental beauty and solitude of these northernmost geographies.
Since coming to the U.S. in 1995 to attend graduate school at UC Berkeley, TC's developed a loyal following within the Bay Area club scene and at Swedish-American festivals. She's headlined at many West Coast venues, including San Francisco's Plush Room and Blake's on Telegraph in Berkeley. She frequently joins forces with the popular R&B ensemble Karma Dogs. Previously, she sang and played keyboard with Implied Five.
Her previous album, Scent of You, received critical praise when it was released in 2004. One reviewer said: "A voice that sounds just as lovely, if not more so, in a tongue foreign to these ears... Her smooth harmonies speak easily to an audience that is sure to continue growing." Producer Ben Yonas first recognized TC's cross-cultural appeal. Using simple acoustic sounds and arrangements, the debut album emphasized her vulnerability and honesty. Scent of You appealed to audiences on both continents.
In 2008, TC composed the film score to the award-winning documentary "Miya of the Quiet Strength." About a badly wounded survivor of an Iowa school shooting, the film is a tribute to a young woman who rose above her resulting paralysis to work as an activist before succumbing to breast cancer.
A survivor of breast cancer, herself, TC continuously supports research and other young survivors of the disease. Her song December Sky was featured on a 2009 CD that raised money and awareness; she also performed on the online radio show Stupid Cancer.

TC was classically trained on the piano as a young girl. She was born in the small town of Koping, Sweden and raised in Mastocka, a rustic village on the western edge of Sweden. TC now travels home frequently to visit family and friends. She also remembers the phonograph at home playing an eclectic variety of Mozart, Duke Ellington, Abba, and Simon & Garfunkel -- an unusual fusion that forged her love for music.
In addition to her music, TC is an accomplished runner and certified Pilates instructor. She lives in Oakland, California.
