"MATOPENI " is a Swahili-word literally meaning "in the mud". As Mutinda says: "Even as you pursue a better life and at times get stuck in the mud, you can still afford to smile". The inspirational album speaking about happiness and contentment that can be found within humble surroundings.

MATOPENI is a journey through time and space. The album blends afro-modern music, ambient moods, rock beats and afro-jazz rhythms, and contains the rare sounds and rhythms of Kenyan people’s traditional music meeting the world influences today. Mutinda sings in Kiswahili and Kikamba (his mothertongue) and the album has motivating lyrics that affirm a brighter day in life despite the challenges.

Marrying African traditional instrumentation such as maboom-boom drums, djembe, African flute with global elements as guitar, bass, keyboard, sax, violin and drums, Mutinda has created a unique style of soul-searching melodies and contagious rhythms.

Most instruments are recorded live capturing the spirit of the musicians. Besides Mutinda's vocal powers, the guitars are the fortitude of his music. Deliberately he chooses his band and recording-artists as the music is not only about the sound, but it also serves the purpose of reflecting the individuality and charisma of each person contributing to the song. The album features many great Kenyan artists such as Barbara Guantai (www.myspace.com/barbaraguantai), Abbi (www.myspace.com/abbimudunia) , Hellon and Dave Mobb Otieno among others.
