Melissa van der Scafe, described by Daily Variety as "a captivating balance of innocence and sensuality," was voted ARTIST OF THE YEAR by fans across the world on www.Femmusic.com for her debut pop album "Urban Peasant" and has been selected as a featured artist on such sites as www.Hitquarters.com and www.AandROnline.com."Her music is bold and alternative and is ready to break big. She is an artist we expect to hear much from in the years to come" (www.Femmusic.com)

"There's a wonderful, pure quality about this artist. It's unpretentious, honest music from the heart...I've always thought that was the best quality an artist could wish for" (Chris Standring from www.AandRonline.com)

"Urban Peasant is easily one of the most commercially viable projects I have reviewed this year." (Gian Fiero at www.Musesmuse.com)

"Indeed, if you are looking for something different, van der Scafe's new twist on pop is a winner on every front" (New York City's Show Business Magazine)

Melissa was born in South Africa and raised in Victoria, British Columbia. With only $500 in their pocket and 2 suitcases, her parents left everything they had behind to emigrate to Canada when she her and her brother Dylan (the internationally acclaimed jazz drummer) were small children, hoping their children would grow up without the prejudices of the then apartheid.

Melissa's writing style now reflects a variety of musical influences, using edgy urban rhythms through electronic samples and surprising grooves, mixed with acoustic instrumentations, sweet melodies and thoughtful lyrics. The online magazine "Muse's Muse" describes Melissa's music:

"Her music never gets boring as they incorporate unusual arrangements and instrumentation not normally associated with pop music... as an industry professional it makes me wonder what she could achieve in a major label studio".

Melissa has already started to gather Triple A Radio play alongside artists such as Jewel and Sheryl Crow on stations across the nation including L.A.'s award winning KCRW (with close to half a million listeners) Medford, MA's WMFO 91.5fm regular play list (Music Director Morgan Huke says "This is a GREAT Record!") as well as stations in Taos, NM, Saint Robert, MO, Eureka, CA, Grand Rapids, MN, Rochester, NY, Laurel, MS and Jamestown, ND.

She has gathered overwhelming reviews from
Newspapers across the country for her singing/songwriting abilities in publications such as THE NEW YORK TIMES, LOS ANGELES TIMES, WASHINGTON POST, DAILY VARIETY, SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE, SHOW BUSINESS MAGAZINE, AND WWW.MUSESMUSE.COM.

Melissa regularly performs at clubs in Los Angeles and New York and lives a gypsy lifestyle...skipping from city to city claiming that wherever she is feels like "home" as long as she is writing and singing.

Recently, Melissa placed her single "Divine" in the SHOWTIME original Film "The Great Commission" (SOULFOOD's Rockmond Dunbar makes his directorial debut.) Melissa was also cast as the leading role in the film after meeting with the Director and Showtime's Producers. Since then Melissa has appeared in more acting roles, including a supporting lead in Ashton Kutcher's new romantic comedy "A Lot Like Love" (scheduled for release in early 2005) and a leading role on Broadway last year in the Tony Nominated revival of BIG RIVER for which she earned a TONY AWARD HONOR along with the cast for SPECIAL ACHIEVEMENT in THEATRE.

Melissa was educated in Music and Acting at The College of Santa Fe, New Mexico (B.F.A.) while also receiving scholarship offers from such prestigious music schools as Berklee College of Music in Boston and The University of North Texas. In Canada she was a finalist for the YTV (Youth TV) Achievement Awards in Toronto, and sang solo vocals in an interview for CBC Radio (Canadian National Radio Station). Straight out of high school she received the General Motors Award for Excellence in Music for her vocal ability.

Melissa completed URBAN PEASANT with producer Eric Monsanty (Paula Abdul, Kristine W.) and mix engineer Helik Hadar (Joni Mitchel, Joan Osbourne). She has also finished filming two music videos.

Melissa van der Scafe's photos and audio clips can be sampled and the CD is available in its entirety on www.MelissavanderScafe.com

That VOICE!!!
author: Ryan Drummond
Aside from the fact that I could just sit and listen to Melissa's voice ALL DAY LONG, I have to give to kudos to this album for just being different! The songs are all multi-layered and interesting. It's not like someone turned on a drum machine, added some notes, and sang over it. Every track is unique, well thought out, and gorgeous. BRAVA, Melissa! I'm a huge fan!! :)
