The young Prussian poet, from whose texts Franz Schubert created Die schöne Müllerin in 1823, and the other great song cycle, Winterreise, at the end of his life in 1827-8 never met his true “kindred spirit”. In a performance for the ages, Max van Egmond and Penelope Crawford vividly recreate this first of two sublime masterpieces.
