Mike Viola is best known as singer, songwriter and musical architect of the Candy Butchers, a highly regarded indie pop-rock band from New York that recorded three critically acclaimed albums for Sony, including 2003’s fan favorite Hang on Mike.
Viola’s film work began a decade ago as the co-producer and lead singer of the title track “That Thing You Do!,” which went on to earn an Oscar® nomination for Best Original Song.
The latest Jake Kasdan/Judd Apatow film, Walk Hard starring John C. Reilly, features songs written by Mike. A spoof on the Hollywood music biopic, Walk Hard is a perfect playground for Viola’s subversive, witty lyrics and catchy-pop expertise. Walk Hard opens in theatres nationwide on December 21.
An independent artist since 2005, Viola released an album of new songs on his own label, Good Morning Monkey Records. Recorded in LA live at Largo, Just Before Dark showcases Mike's sharp abilities as a live performer. Once available on his website, mikeviola.com, the vinyl-only album sold out in three months.
His new album Lurch is alive with the classic-pop euphoria and vivid storybook imagery that Viola’s fans have come to treasure. Currently available on his website, Lurch will be distributed worldwide 2008.

Perfect album

There is only one bad thing about this album: it's too short! On Mike Viola's site you can buy the vinyl with three bonus songs (something electric, motel mood, find somebody to love) that are at least as good as the songs on the album.
But even without these songs you can't resist this CD. Just lsiten to "Strawberry blonde", "So much better", "You're Alright but You Never Admit When You're Wrong" or "Good Ideas Grow On Trees".
Perfect pop songs. Buy it! Now! :-)

AMAZING!

How can you not give this CD five stars? About the only thing that could have been done to improve this CD, in my opinion, would be to swap the Japanese version's bonus tracks, "Find Somebody To Love" and "Something Electric", with "Girly Worm" and "All Bent Out Of Shape". Usually bands save the less-than-perfect tracks for bonus tracks, but Mike put two of the best songs ever written on the Japanese import version as bonus tracks, which means if I buy 5 copies of the regular version to give out to well-deserving people, I have to live with the knowledge that they aren't going to be hearing the Japanese import's bonus tracks. So do I purchase 5 copies from CDBaby and then also include burned copies that include the bonus tracks, or do I just pretend like those songs do not exist? I've never had this dilemma before. "Something Electric" could be on a CD all by itself and still be worth $12.97. I can't justify purchasing 5 import copies at $22.99 to $38.99 each, depending on where I get them from, but why does nearly every song on this CD have to be so incredible? Is it the voice? Mike's voice rivals or even surpasses my other two favorite singers from the last few years, Sondre Lerche and Matthew Sweet, so that could be it. I have the Major Labels CD to thank for helping me discover him. Is it the song writing? Surely, that's got to be it. The instrumentation? Background vocals? The keen sense of melody? I guess I don't HATE "Girly Worm" (maybe just the part from 1:17 to 1:28) and "All Bent Out Of Shape" (it's been growing on me), but there's just no comparison to the far-superior Japanese import bonus tracks. I've never felt such sorrow before in my life because of this. Lucky Japanese bastards! But the regular version of this CD still contains more infectious pop songs than most bands can write in their entire careers, and that in itself is worth the purchase of 5 copies of this CD! :) "So Much Better" is pure perfection. Thank you, Mike! 2/23/2009

It's tough to decide which album is my favorite of 2008...Lurch or the Mike Viola-produced Kelly Jones "SheBANG!" Both have not left my cd player...since October 2008, I just can't get tired of them!
