Album Notes

Mya grew up in central New York, and began her music career on the piano at a young age. Her music interest expanded as she learned the trumpet, taught herself the drum kit, and eventually taught herself the guitar after an initial few lessons. She began writing music of her own in high school and continued to play and sing throughout her career at Smith College, performing for audiences until the release of her first album, Getting Deep in Roots, in 2003. Mya then began performing at various venues throughout Massachusetts and was featured on Smith TV in 2003. Returning to Smith after a year’s hiatus, she began work on a new album entitled About the Tide, released on March 11th, 2006. About the Tide features Mya on guitar and vocal, as well as piano, electric guitar and djembe.

Mya draws inspiration from an array of modern day folk artists including Patty Griffin, Gillian Welch, Martin Sexton and Ani DiFranco, and classic folk musicians like Joni Mitchell, James Taylor and Bob Dylan.

"Candle" and "Eclipse" were selected from her sophmore release (About the Tide) for use in RoadTrip Nation, a PBS documentary series, airing August 2007!!! Both songs were used in the theatrical trailer on www.roadtripnation.com.

Mya also took second place in a showcase competition for Portland songwriters at Nine Muses Acoustic Tavern!

Mya is now working on a new project, "Before I Get Gone"- With the use of her Mac computer and Portland kitchen, she is testing new waters and doing it all herself. The next album will show more of a stripped down, back to basics mentality that folk music grew from, infused with technology and the use of sound filters. With new influences and new ideas, "Before I Get Gone" covers everything from folk, blues and jazz, to rock and alt country. Mya introduces the banjo and electric guitar awakening a new sound on her upcoming album. "Before I Get Gone" is scheduled to release in the Northwest on March 14, 2008. Tracks can be heard ahead of time on her myspace page. www.myspace.com/myaelaine.

"About the Tide" and "Take Me Down" are my two favorite tracks in this collection; they bookend an overall amazing album. I can honestly say that, out of my entire music collection, this disc is in competition with Joni Mitchell's "Blue" for most-played... and "About the Tide" probably wins. The guitar is percussive and sweet, and the vocals are deep and soulful. Mya is a fabulously talented musician/songwriter. Grab a hold of this CD, and definitely check out her MySpace page for clips from her new album!
