Born out of the aesthetic of iconic jam bands such as the Grateful Dead, Phish and the Allman Brothers, Mystic Canyon has been a prominent fixture on the Portland, Oregon live music scene for three years. Known for epic three-hour plus shows and a desire to never play the same set list twice, Mystic Canyon performs rootsy story telling songs with the looseness and improvisational flair that has come to define the burgeoning and vibrant jam band movement.
With the release of its first studio CD, Across the Red Sandstone, Mystic Canyon has captured condensed performances of original songs that paint a picture of restless yearning, love, loss and discovery.
From the opening old west feel of Just Like Shakespeare to the quiet introspection of Tears and Dust to the rocking finale of Finding My Way Home, Mystic Canyon showcases its infectious grooves and earthy blend of folk, blues, swing and straight up rock.

A delightful and deeply satisfying CD
author: Todd Habla
The Mystic Canyon Band has soul in spades. Their music is very much in the tradition of the Grateful Dead and the Allman Brothers with some Johnny Cash as the third dimension. Hewitt, Smith and Kuerbis are skillful story tellers and deep character developers. Just like the album tittle - Across the Red Sandstone - the music contains evocative visual imagery. This is great songwriting. This is great musicianship. I love the tasteful Garcia influenced guitar. I love the organ and the Beatley walking basslines. The MCB is hooky choruses with yummy harmonies. Lovely instrumental breaks. A delightful and deeply satisfying CD. Plus great cover art in a really classy package. Highly recommended.
