Nairobi Trio bass player Sean Daly and guitarist Eric Haar started working together in 1992 while they were both members of the Warrensburg, Missouri band Flake. During their time with Flake, they had the privilege of sharing the stage with the likes of Ultraman, Slackjaw, Boy's Life, and Cher U.K. Sean departed in 1994 to complete his degree in radio and television broadcasting.
Flake subsequently changed their name to Not a Step in 1995 and Eric continued with them for several more years as they played shows with Kevin Seconds 5' 10", Frogpond, Monkey Boy, Kosher, TV 50, Edsel, Gringo, Dumpster Juice, Grither and Meatjack among others. Not a Step disbanded in 1997, and Eric returned to his home town of Kansas City for a two year stint in The Keely Zoo before taking his leave from that project in November of 1999.
Sean and Eric, neither attached to a musical project any longer, ran into each other at a Kansas City nightclub in April 2000 and decided to get together and do some jamming. Sean is heavily influenced by indie bands such as Fugazi, Jawbox, and Burning Airlines; Eric prefers the NYC hardcore sound typified by H20 and Sick Of It All, but as the new material began to take shape it seemed their divergent influences were working for them rather than against them. Unique textures and unusual rhythms blended with the "fist-in-the-air" power of hardcore anthems and moments of quiet, structured beauty segued into seeming chaos.
By June 2000, Sean and Eric had written 45 minutes worth of material and decided to move forward as a full-fledged band, but there was one small problem - they required a drummer. Sean asked his sister, Samantha Daly, a highly accomplished musician on the trombone, to join in behind the drum kit. She agreed even though she had never played the drums before. One rehearsal was proof enough and Samantha was offered the position, accepted and at that moment the Nairobi Trio was born.
The Nairobi Trio spent several months rehearsing and refining their material, crafting a unique sound that reflects their diverse influences, but still pays a subtle tribute to the great independent bands of the past. In January 2001, The Nairobi Trio entered Guttersnipe Studio in Kansas City, MO to record their debut EP, Accusatory Anthems, the EP, which was recorded by Guttersnipe owner John Evans and mixed and produced by Evans and The Nairobi Trio, was released on 2/15/01.
