"Live Arts" is a lush and energetic live debut from The Naked Puritans' acoustic side-project. Featuring acoustic guitar, cello, violin, bass, drums, & vocals - The Naked Puritan Philharmonic balances aspects of rock and classical to produce original music that is uniquely resonant and propulsive. Showcasing twelve diverse pop songs, the Naked Puritan Philharmonic CD sweeps from poignant to humorous while retaining a sensuous atmosphere through an intelligent blend of modern and traditional elements.
Recorded during one evening in an art studio at a benefit for local community theater, "Live Arts" captures a unique and intimate atmosphere. From the CD liner-notes: "The studio had a light hardwood floor, soft pin-board walls and a well-stocked bookshelf that provided a backdrop for the band. It was an ideal environment for the music. Paint smells drifted around the room, while flowers, fruit, colored bits of pottery, tree branches and textured fabrics were placed about and arranged in still-life. Half finished paintings and sketches were pinned to and stacked against the walls. An odd assortment of lamps gave off warm, dramatic light."
For a sit-down show, the proceedings got a bit raucous. The normally sedate acoustic-arts patrons drank vats of wine, pushed chairs aside to dance and smootched on band members. And to everyone's audible shock, an older woman did a striptease upon hearing mention of the band's Naked n Free Guarantee.
"The Philharmonic show was 90 minutes of sheer pop transcendence, and one of the best shows I've seen anywhere in the past year. The addition of the strings opened up space in the music, giving the material breathing room and a subtle but undeniable power."
Keith Morris, Cville Weekly, Charlottesville VA - June 2004
"Crystalline sounds and precise harmonies emanate when this band performs. Sometimes locked on to an irresistible pop beat, other times blissfully ethereal, the Puritans aren't afraid to use negative space to craft smart tunes and deep moods. If only getting naked always felt so smooth."
Nicole Truxell, C-ville Weekly, Charlottesville, VA

Outstanding, creative, unusual
author: April Catterton
I originally got the CD to see what my old high school boyfriend (Tristan Puckett) was up to. I always knew he was very talented but was surprised how terrific the music really was. It was honest, down to earth, yet really beautiful and creative. Each song had its own character and deep meaning. Really appreciated the music but the lyrics were great also. I went ahead and purchased the other Naked Puritan CD after hearing the first one!

unique sound and good songs - music lives up to band name
author: Etsushi F.
Yep, the band sounds like they had fun that night. I'm also really taken by the fact that the odd juxtaposition of words in the band name is mirrored in the instrumentation. And from smart elegant ballads to hilarious bar-band rockers(in the good way) the tasteful strings are perfectly balanced and integrated with rock unit. This is far more than an "Unplugged" one-off to my ears; it feels complete. Do check this one out because it's working some indie-pop magic on multiple levels.

Rock album with great arrangements
author: Don Semmens
The songs on Live Arts stand alone as great rock/pop songs, but it's the arrangements that are the highlight of this cd. The strings don't "schmaltz" up the driving melodies of the uptempo songs. And they greatly enhance the softer songs like Machines of Loving Grace. That song as well as Postmodern Love, Several Wicked Women and the very funny Harrison Ford are my favorite songs on the CD.

Can I kiss the boy who made this music happen? This CD is wonderful! Appropo to the band's oxmoronic name, the music is as soothing as it is invigorating. The songs are witty, catchy and emotionally evocative in an endearingly honest way. There's not an ounce of contrivance or artifice, and that's the rarest of traits anytime, anywhere especially in popular creative endeavors. Kudos! This band has a lush, ornate style with rock solid underpinnings and a lead boy with a smart heart and soaring voice.
