"This Virginia trio's three-song EP exudes more power and pop than most powerpoppers entire careers. Secret weapons include bassline bounce, Buzzcocky nasality, and astute wit: one song about an ex-girlfriend whose kettle almost burns her house down while she sings "Bye Bye Love" in the shower; another about a punk rocker turned dad who joins the army reserve and dreads that his teenager might start sniffing glue."
The Village Voice - July 2004
This is stripped down, back to basics, song oriented, emotive rock and roll with internal dynamics -i.e. no click track - the playing's a little raw and the production is slightly polished the way that a modern rock recording could and should be - the singing's impassioned without turning histrionic and guitars are layered for multiple listenings.. plus the bass gets to sing out from time to time (see Tokyo Rose) - we write broad hooks and snappy smart pop lyrics that speak of everything human except how smart and snappy we are - like Emily Dickinson, we currently prefer dashes to periods and other forms of punctuation. well... Our songs are danceable but not mindless repetitive kick drum tranceisms and we play them a little fast so some folks say we're punk-based - we're self-produced with aspirations for permanent injection into the global consciousness, but we don't take ourselves that seriously cause we're a band not a middle-east peace initiative....although, we'd be happy to be employed as one. Let's just say that The Puritans are one of the best amalgamations of indie-rock and power-pop one can find these days - new pop classics for the discriminating masses. Yeah, that sounds just about right.
Let's foot-note this authentication narrative with a story: this is one small reason why we are intent on championing the dying pop art form known as - the single! Poor little single!!! The band recently went to the local record store (locked at the shoulders like some ravenous rock-hungry Cerberus) to look for a song we dug on the local independent radio station. (We asked for The Caesars - Jerk It Out.) They had it, but when we asked for it as a single...., the clerk said, "Nobody releases singles anymore." Then she laughed, spit in our six eyes and told us to leave. She obviously hadn't kept up on her Greek Mythology. We swore (in unison) that we would return with a tri-headed vengeance. Don't Burn Your House Down is our first single in a 4 quarterly singles/ one album per year plan for the band. It's a lot to bite off for an indie band but you can help us get our sweet revenge and assist us in championing the return of the rock-single by purchasing our first effort!

One of the band members gave me this CD for my birthday at a SPIN mag party. I checked it out the next day and it hit me like bricks! This is really powerful music with some witty lyrics, too. I checked out their site and the pop-up lead me here so... I had to say my say - thanks! Buy it!

Easy Come is Not Easy Go!

I just stumbled across this band rockin' CBGB's on audition night (of all times) and saw 30 to 40 lucky people transfixed by a catchy, playful, and unconsciously sexy exuberance in the dankest, albeit coolest old rock club known to NY. As I watched the band, I lamented, nay weeped and cried to the gods that I hadn't the dough for their newly released EP. Boo-ff’n-hoo, right? Well, here’s what cryin’ gets’ya… as I made my way out of the club after the gig, I spied, in a dirty rain-puddle, a copy of “Don’t Burn Your House Down”. I don't know how the blessed thing got there and I almost didn't pick it up for fear of the unknown, however I saw that it was perfectly shrink-wrapped (gotta love protection), and I took the chance. Yep, all this to say that I got lucky twice that night - well, three times if you count lonely self-love. Aww, now that’s pathetic! Anyway, here's the point… I LOVE THIS CD just like I love myself… often. These songs are almost a daily ritual, especially Tokyo Rose with its sensuous slow intro, come-hither buildup, freak-out middle, and then smooth drive home to the soft, slow end! To whomever dropped the CD; sorry but it’s mine, mine, mine all mine! To the band – thank you, may I have another!

could be a new classic
author: Michael Ratan - N.J.
I really like this CD. My prediction is that with more releases like this one, we’ll have an indie-supergroup on our hands. Buy it.
