PROSE BIO - NANCY MARANO

Nancy Marano, vocalist, pianist and jazz educator has been consistently lauded by critics, audiences and colleagues as one of the finest musicians working today. She has been profiled by Whitney Balliett in The New Yorker, by Dr. Billy Taylor on CBS Sunday Morning, by Terry Teachout in The Wall Street Journal, and in an extensive interview by Jazz Improv Magazine, and most recently by NPR Station WRTI-FM "Crossover," a one-hour broadcast with Producer Jill Pasternack and Dr. Jack Buerkle.

As a result of her recording "If You Could See Us Now!" with arrangements by Manny Albam played by the 62-piece Netherlands Metropole Orchestra, Dr. Herb Wong of the IAJE Journal named her "Top 4 Jazz Vocalists of the Year."

Nancy has to date recorded 6 CDs as a leader, and two as guests of Benny Carter and Dick Hyman. She has also recorded with Gerry Mulligan, Michel Legrand, Claudio Roditi, and Roger Kellaway. Her latest CD, SURE THING, features Nancy as vocalist, pianist, and arranger, and includes the talents of Michael Abene, Michael Moore, Grady Tate and John Mosca.

REVIEWS

Ms. Marano is a singer best appreciated within the quiet folds of evening.

Marano focuses on familiar standards in less than familiar settings. There is a superbly gentle versions of Frishberg's underappreciated "Heart's Desire." Saving the best for last Nancy closes with a medley of "Never Let Me Go" and "Goodbye" that brilliantly counterbalances the before and after of romantic desperation. JAZZTIMES

Throughout the disc, Ms. Marano's tapering sustained tones with their breathy undercoating are a joy to hear. Her phrasing is natural and elastic. Her intelligence and dramatic flair inform the stories she sings. The two tracKs on which she provides her own piano accompaniment are intimate and extraordinary. ALAN BARGEBUHR

SURE THING was recorded with separate groups on the East Coast & West Coast. . . Nancy has assembled a collection of both imaginative and intriguing material. . . I am partial to singers who find different ways to present well-known songs: such is the magic of jazz. . . All Nancy's CDs have been exceptional. . . This may be her best yet! ROGER CRANE
