While Hall is influenced by fellow musicians and sometimes collaborates with friends, her vision remains as originally intended. “I get inspired by people and have to go with it, but when it comes to my music, I insist on holding all the cards,” she smiles. This is a good thing, as Hall’s work manages to embody a discreet array of gonzo American popular culture while keeping her own trademark whim. Given this creative energy, the lullaby choruses of “Our Ocean,” the driving bassline of “In That Moment” and the ethereal piano harmonies of “From the Outside” are that much more enjoyable. Hall’s work is an alluring break from the familiar and unequivocal proof that music can still be fun.
