Naomi LaViolette properly introduces herself with “Words or Not”, leading the song from the piano, with transparent, in-the-moment lyrics, an emotionally intimate lead vocal, and haunting background vocals. An electric guitar gives the song its progressive edge while the drummer’s rock beat ghosts through glimpses of jazz patterns. The string arrangement takes it to movie-soundtrack heights, and top-notch production brings all these elements together in an ambitious presentation that still speaks at a personal level.
