notes

Natalie Walker. Urban Angel. Biography.

Born and raised in Indiana, vocalist Natalie Walker is an artist whose lilting, melodic voice and lyrical reveries reflect a life journey of determination and self-discovery. With musical influences ranging from Alison Krauss to Portishead, Jewel to Lauryn Hill, Beth Orton to Bjork, the former lead singer of downtempo electronic group Daughter Darling now delivers her own unique, haunting sonic landscape that is at once organic, ethereal, elegant and entrancing. “Creating music is my outlet,” says Natalie. “I was born to sing. When I don’t, I feel empty. When I do, I feel fulfilled. It’s that simple.”

Urban Angel, her solo album debut, was co-written by Natalie and two-man production team Stuhr. “I worked with two really great producers out of Brooklyn, Dan Chen and Nate Greenberg. They’d send me the rough copy of a song and the music would just evoke emotion,” she explains. “Its like fitting pieces of a puzzle together. When you’re in the studio recording its all very raw and real. I try to make a song new each time I sing it. I want it to be unforgettable. My producers are amazing. They forced me to develop my real voice. I’ve improved my vibrato and my tone. Stuhr delivered exactly what I asked of them. It couldn’t have happened more perfectly.”

“This album happened so naturally. The music all melds together. It’s chill and non-intrusive, the perfect mellow music at an intimate gathering. Or you can sit back, put your headphones on and really get lost in it,” Natalie suggests. “Urban Angel definitely exudes sensuality, and sexuality, and a little bit of heartache. I really tap into it live. I’m really excited to perform the new material. It’s a true representation of who I am. Urban Angel is a great album. I love it and I’m really proud.”

First of all, this CD is very well produced. The arangements are nicely done and unique. All these little sounds, songs are layers that build up, very beautiful. It's some electronic influences, but it's not overdone, it fits. Next, Natalie has a wonderful and charming voice that is remarkable. It's a good collection of songs and this album grows the more you listen to it. You can really feel her passion for these songs. I'm looking forward to more.

This is such a great cd!! I highly recommend it. The lyrics are so beautiful as well as the vocals. Natalie Walker is an amazing talent, and she will go very far!!!

  • 4 stars
    author: MetalMusicAddict

While I LOVE Natalie's voice I felt the music on this just didn't capture the same greatness that Daughter Darling's "Sweet Shadows" did. While there a couple of stand out songs (Urban Angel, Colorblind and Rest Easy) I cant get into the whole CD the way I did with "Sweet Shadows". Now will I throw this CD out or sell it? Hell no! Will I tell others to buy it? Hell yes! Just for me, it didn't hit the same DD spot that so many of us were wanting filled by this album. Felt like something missing. 4 stars because its not average at all but I can't give it a 5.

  • so much Soul...

I absolutely love the CD. I bought 2, one for me and the other a gift. I am with it in my car and my house. Natalie seems like a genuine nice woman and that is projected in her music. I will probably buy more as more gifts are always needed.

I really like the album, it's pretty much what I expected, Urban Angel is more than a pretty good continuation of what Daughter Darling did and I do hope Natalie keeps on going. A really good effort!

This album is nearly perfect for its genre - mellow, haunting, emoting regret and hope simultaneously. Her voice has made a quantum leap and the songwriting is first rate!

Anyone doesn't see this album as a 5 star beauty should clean their ears! Natalie has this way of sending waves of chills through my body with each track of this album. Goosebumps every time. America finally has it's very own Imogen Heap. Embrace it people! Buy this album!

  • Better than the last I heard of her...
    author: Michelle

I have come to the conclusion that while I like this artist, She doesn't stay in my CD player long. Be it this CD, or Daughter Darling, I listen to it once or twice, and maybe really like one song.

  • tremendous
    author: Ryan

You can really hear Natalie's influences all melded together on this album, turned into something of her own making. There's not one dull moment on this disc, that's for sure. Absolutely stellar!

  • great cd!

I just saw Natalie perform last night in Philly. Never heard of her or this cd - she was opening for the AMAZING Toby Lightman. I really enjoyed Natalie's performance so I bought this cd after the show (and met Natalie too!). I listened to the cd in it's entirety today - just breathtaking.

  • Wonderful CD!
    author: Anna

This is an awesome CD, the lyrics are thoughtful and the sound is delicate, well-blended and simply breath-taking. I suggest this cd to anyone, there's no way you wouldn't like it.

  • Enchanting
    author: Nick

I have a couple cds where I can listen to the whole thing and not get bored or have any intention to change it and put another one on. This is one of them. It's an eloquent mix of soulful, electronic, relaxing music that makes you think of being in New York on a cold yet beautiful day. I don't have Daughter Darling's cd but if it was half as good as this it would be great. It's beautiful, captivating, stunning, and everything in between. Natalie Walker's vocals are 100% perfect but they're not fake and computerized. They are real and authentic. Organic and Unique. The beats are simple and sweet. Also the Sturr production is high-class. In a world with pop culture saturated garbage, this really, really stands out. Overall, the album is like Quicksand- it pulls you in and won't let go and you go deeper and deeper with every passing second. Will eventually become legendary.

  • Still enchanting
    author: Mandy

Your voice has been stuck in my head since the first time I heard you sing in school. I loved the first album and still play it frequently. I couldn't wait for this new album to come out. Your voice and lyrics are so beautiful but so tragic at the same time.I guess that tragedy is part of the beauty to me. You are an enchanting person and i'm looking forward to what else you will throw at us. Congrats on everything.

  • absolutely amazing

This is one of the best voices I have ever heard. Her voice is so deep and true, it gives you a feeling you never had before in life. It makes you cry and laugh at the same time.

  • I loved Daughter Darling, but this is even better

Natalie has the most amazing voice and these songs are wonderful. I have heard both No One Else and Quicksand on KCRW in LA. I can't recommend this enough.
