“As observant and nervy as ever... illuminates what good songwriters help us to see and feel.”
- Michael McCall, Nashville Scene, December 2007
“...the best kept secret on the American indy rock scene.”
- Craig Bickhardt, Ninety Mile Wind, blog for songwriters
Songwriter-singer/guitarist Nathan Bell toured the US and Canada throughout the '80s, playing at clubs, concert halls, and (as a member of the duo, Bell and Shore) most of the premier North American acoustic music festivals, including the Walnut Valley Festival, the Winnipeg Folk Festival, and the Mariposa Folk Festival. His work on acoustic, National steel-bodied, and electric guitars was often overshadowed by his songwriting, which is an amalgamation of ideas inspired by writers ranging from Jack London, William Faulkner, and the poet Marvin Bell to Townes Van Zandt and southern short-story master Larry Brown.
He stopped touring in 1992 and with the arrival of his first child in 1995 left the business altogether to concentrate on raising a growing family.
During the '80s Bell shared the stage with Emmylou Harris, Eddie and Martha Adcock, Stompin' Tom Connors, Townes Van Zandt, Kathy Mattea, Mary-Chapin Carpenter, Ricky Skaggs, and a whole cast of scofflaws and gypsies from the folk and bluegrass archipelago. During the early '90s he was a staff writer for Ten Ten Music in Nashville and was regularly featured at Nashville's Bluebird Cafe, often as part of the "writers in the round" series with many notable songwriters, including Grammy-Award winner Don Henry, Craig Bickhardt, and CMA award nominee Angela Kaset.
In 1991, he recorded an album of songs with producer/guitarist Richard Bennett (Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris, Marty Stuart) that was never released.

Transnational Appeal
author: Pat Leonard
I like Nathan's honesty of expression and simplicity of technique wrapped in an oh-so-experienced song crafting style that run of the mill song smiths would give a lot for. Nathan has a great 'lived in' deep voice. His collaborators are all talents in their own rights. Nathan's observations appeal to me as an Australian working class man as they obviously do to his local US audience. The pity is that I can't see his live gig yet as it's a bit of a hike from Bacchus Marsh in Victoria, Australia to Lebanon in Tennessee, USA. Yes, I'm a fan - I have ordered Nathan's other CD "In Tune, On Time, Not
Dead" from your catalogue.

Artist of Conscience
author: Hillbilly Haiku
Nathan is a recent find for me, but I already know he'll be the soundtrack for my summer and part of my listening habit for years to come. Nathan's writing has too much integrity and honesty for Nashville. That and his decision to walk away are the only explanations for his music not being more well known. If there is any justice, his songs will find their audience in a BIG way. Cannot wait to hear his music live!

Nathan Bell is an enormous talent. His lyrics are heartbreaking, hilarious, hellacious and heartwarming. His guitar playing is pure genius. He's been around the emotional block, and has the licks to prove it. Bell is perhaps the best reflection of today's America - conflicted, introspective, humble and resilient. Take a listen and buy the CD.

Nathan makes such wonerful musical and lyrical contributions to American music. He upholds the great traditions of such giants as Woody Guthurie and puts a mirror to the face of America and asks, "Who are we and why are we here?" No crevice of the human experience is left untouched by this great performer of his own material. When you listen to Nathan sing, you always learn something you did not know before, but does not preach at you, he simply encourages to be aware of all the wonderment of life.
Respectfully,
Larry
