notes

Tension, it has been said, is the life of any organization.

Applied to an album, that life is nearly tangible, and Nathan Johnson manages to capture the quivering uncertainties of self in his first solo record.

Inspired by the likes of Elliott Smith and Radiohead, In Search of the Flip nimbly leads these sensibilities down a forest trail yet to be traveled. Nearly all of Johnson's songs are mined from deep places and at times they seem geared more toward a detective than an average music listener - someone with time to invest and a mystery to discover.

Recently Nathan has been giving his efforts to the eclectic artistic team known as The Cinematic Underground. Based in New York and England, they have just released an album unlike any other called Annasthesia (note: also available through CD BABY: www.cdbaby.com/nathanj2). It is a story with main characters told over the length of one album - almost like a film trapped in a CD - complete with 24 page graphic novella and full band songs to make your heart melt.

But here lies Johnson at his most stripped down as most of the songs are complete with voice and acoustic guitar. A few of the players from the Cinematic Underground make guest appearances with drummer Zachary adding percussion and Bethany's voice fleshing out nearly half of the tracks.

Produced by Aaron Johnson (3rd Degree, Annasthesia) in a basement in late 1999, In Search of the Flip captures the brash innovation of an unschooled artist successfully breaking all the rules.

Dollface floats with quirky violin licks and velour beats as Choose Hope travels from Nathan's intricate picking patterns to a lush grand finale. A master of quirky innovation, Johnson shines on Hey Thom which succeeds in playing hide-and-seek with several keys while still being one of the catchiest tracks on the record.

This album is one to soak in, letting the sometimes foreign chord progressions seep into your pores while the masterful lyrics rattle away at your psyche.

I love this album! I first found out about Nathan Johnson at Greenbelt last year where he was performing as part of The Cinematic Underground. I really loved their album 'Annasthesia' but I think I love this even more! Everyone should buy this album.

An absolute must listen for fans of Elliott Smith. A unique stripped-down style combining intriguing lyrics with intricate melody patterns, these songs lay out naked emotions and a variety of stories. Wrought with tension, the album combines complex acoustic guitar stylings with exceptional imagination in the sparse percussion and well placed, creative keyboard lines. All this, and he still keeps the listener's emotions tied up in the integrity of the lyrics.

I am from Pennsylvania and a friend of mine who met Nathan in Britian let me listen to this cd. It is one of my favorites. There are very few cd's which I think express intrinsic spirituality as well as this one. My favorite song is suspension Bridge. Excellent CD

  • Audacious!

I just heard about this morning and all I can say, I am amazed and excited. This cd is bold, daring and brazen. Thus far I love the song "Trading my capers in for cash". I would recommend this to round out anyone's collection.

In Search of the Flip is a constant request of my 3 year old daughter. And no, that isn't because her alternate choice is the Barney theme. The diverse range of song on this CD alllows different listeners, in various moods, to have an overall enjoyable music experience. When does the next one come out?

  • I have been unable to find "In Search of the Filp"

Having loved In Search of the Flip, I was elated to hear that Johnson had followed it up with In Search of the Filp. However, I am still in search of the filp myself, because no one seems to know of its existence. Oh filp, where are you?

  • Awesome doesn't begin to describe it..

When I first heard this CD I was amazed. Even now when I listen to it (and I listen to it a lot) I keep hearing new elements that I hadn't noticed before. I'm the kind of person who needs music on when I'm in a certain mood, and this is the CD for ALL moods. The music is so different from what you normally hear on the radio, It's got a warmth and a depth that you don't get from today's manufactured bands. It helps you relax, and makes you think about what's important in life and where your priorities lie. I recomend this CD to anyone and everyone, it's truly outstanding!
