Album Notes

Nathan Parent is a young musician from the small town of Ashland, Wisconsin. Raised with varying genres of music, he developed a very open relationship with the myriad artists he heard. When he started middle school, his oldest brother gave him a drumkit and he began to learn percussion. With influences such as: Led Zeppelin and Rush, he hoped to be like the classic rock artists he so admired. Though after time, (and upon entering High School) he was greeted with the desire to start a band and in doing so, found his true calling playing the guitar.

Throughout High school, he spent time developing his style and listening habits. One artist in particular that propelled him further was none-other, than the Norwegian pop artist, Sondre Lerche. Nothing was the same after the fateful night he first heard "Two Way Monologue"; and it was then that Nathan latched onto the idea of becoming a song writer.

It was after moving out East to Maryland in the Fall of 2007 and returning home again to Wisconsin during the Spring of 2008, that he began working on his own original songs in the studio with sound engineer and producer, Ryan Rusch. After an entire year of tweaking, (and a month long trip to Norway in January) he finally has something to share!

The "In the Shade of Doubt - EP" includes some of his more acoustically arranged material from the sessions over the past year. With soft vocals and flowing lines of heartfelt lyrics accompanying the guitar, he has managed to touch on a few different styles within the course of the first five songs. Starting with the upbeat, Country-esque picking and shuffle based percussion on "Listening In"; to the New Orleans marching band style horns and rhythms on "Parallel Figures"; to the 6/8 celestial strumming in "Swoon", he has proven that even when the songs are not full to the brim with the ordinary pop fixings and production, you can still appreciate the simplicity of his ideas. Finishing off the EP, are the four live tracks recorded at the Black Cat Coffee House in his hometown of Ashland, Wisconsin on February 26, 2009. (Listen for the signature Pen-tapped playing on "Dueling Hearts"!)

When you take a listen, you will be very pleased to hear what has taken over one year of recording (and over two years of writing) to achieve!

People tend to think that the only thing that comes from Wisconsin is cheese, but they are sorely mistaken. Nathan Parent's music also comes from that glorious state, and it is NOT cheese. With each song you taste a different flavor of his life. Mixing genres like country and pop on "Listening In", or the acoustic delight that is "Night Thoughts", and the jazzy style worked into "Parallel Figures." He works with a wide variety of styles that he makes his own. Definitely NOT cheese. I would recommend this to all of my friends (and I have.)
