The Nationals Blues band are an incredibly talented group of musicians with strong blues influences. They play around the Toronto area and delight club audiences with their combinations of skills, and good repartee with the audience. Band leader Brian Cober is the driving force behind the band. Joe McNamara, who plays bass, is the backbone of the rhythm section.
In northern Ontario- where things like this happen, in the middle of the night- when things like this happen, Brian Cober and Paul McNamara decided to form a band called "The Nationals". "Our musical vision was very different from the people we were backing up. We knew we had something special" remembers Brian.
Since then they have released three CD's, played all of Canada (that's a lot!), and parts of the U.S. and Europe. They were Bo Diddley's back-up band for a tour, and have worked with some of Canada's best, including Dave Colter, Jim Heineman, Jodie Drake, Nick Kent, Eugene Smith, Laura Hubbert and many more.
Brian uses a system he invented called "Double Slide Guitar." Holding a modified steel guitar bar in his left hand he adds a smaller slide on his left thumb. Using the two slides together, he creates a unique guitar experience that must be seen and heard. The music is original blues-rock that's been called "playfully eccentric, rhythm driven blues."

Damn good! I loved this CD .. I thought the best CD I had heard produced by a small band... yes all tracks good. I follow this band whereever it goes in the GTA area... I'm thinking about booking them into a private party / event since I have great confidence in their appeal.

Im just scratching my head-why arent they huge?
author: mike garrett
I have been wearing out this cd. Not a bad cut on there.
some of the best bass playing you will here and the double slide guitar is out of this world. Double slide is not just a flashy gimmick but so musical and may be the best guitar inovation in 30 years , its that good.
You cant play those chords with one slide.

This is a very unique, and rockin CD. He plays with two slides together and gets some great swells. Lay It On is my favorite. Whens the new one?

These guys should be huge!
author: Simon McKenzie
I was lucky enough to stumble across these guys playing in Kensington Market in Toronto and catch them later that night at Grossman's Tevern. It was such a great sound and unique style of guitar that I had to buy the CD, and to be honest I was expecting to be disappointed because a lot of small-time indie releases just don't capture the essence of a band properly, but this one does. Not only does it highlight Brian Cober's unique technique (what about all those guitar player magazines, why haven't they caught up with him?) but it also showcases the songwriting talents of Cober and bassist Paul McNamara. Not an Ordinary Man is one hell of a song, and it has a great driving rhythm and wild pulse that makes it stand out. Nowhere Left to Ride and Listen Up are also great standout tunes, as is Little Johnny Taylor's Only the Lonely Knows, the lone cover version here. The result is a refreshingly original take on the blues that is worth checking out on CD - and live if you're in the Toronto area. These guys should be well-known across the world because there's no-one else like them.
