Album Notes

National Beekeepers Society is a three piece indie rock outfit that exploded onto the music scene last year from Madison, Wisconsin. Their music is a darkly fun rock style that incorporates aspects of bands such as Spoon, Thee Headcoats and Pavement, along with a 1960's rock and roll feel similar to that of the Kinks. On the band's self-titled first release, National Beekeepers Society unleash a taut, aggressive set of tracks that have been described as a primitive, raw sound rarely encountered in today's music. The lyrics are smart, quirky and refreshing. Grab this album now and hear how 2007 should sound!

From the Press:

"Themes of death, sickness and suicide all wrapped in jangly guitars and slightly twisted lyrics make National Beekeepers Society's self-titled release a compelling and strangely satisfying listen. Respect to these Wisconsin boys."

-Billy Zero, XM Satellite Radio

“With ten songs in twenty-seven minutes, the National Beekeepers Society seem to have taken a page from Weezer’s playbook: rock as hard as you can for thirty minutes and then get out quick. ”Swing Dream Requiem” comes closest to the aggresive rock of the Pixies while standout track “Scars” yearns to be Neutral Milk Hotel. This is fine, because other than perhaps the Arcade Fire, no one’s writing songs like that anymore.”

-Rick’s Cafe, Madison WI

"National Beekeepers Society's recent self-titled LP laid quirky keyboards and harmonies over a world-weary rock base. It’s a lo-fi unassuming record, yet the band doesn’t seem to be completely joking when it claim’s Brian Eno as an influence- - ”Scars”, an otherwise somber acoustic song, benefits from a strange, buzzing synth in the background."

NBS has it down
author: Kyle Hunter
This aspiring 3 piece hailing from Madison Wisconsin has what it takes. No one in the music industry is really sure what *it* is, but they seem to have figured *it* out. This freshman album sounds incredibly polished, gleaming and honed. While at the same time it retains an edge and electricity like that of a live show. It's hard to peg this band, to label them or keyhole them into a genre. One song leaves you feeling the "alt-rock" vibe and the next is "alt-country" with a splash of "folk-punk." All of it is good. Let's just call it "Indie." Some songs take you away. They remind you of something, but you can't quite figure out what it is... a dusty desert road, a quiet northen lake or a letter you forgot to mail. The intellectual, layered and manipulating lyrics are there. As are the guitar hooks, roaming bass lines and crisp percussion. If you have a chance to catch them live at one of their shows in the Midwest do not hesitate. At first listen it appears that their musical influences range from the Pixies to Wilco to the Flaming Lips to Bowie. But after a few more spins it all meshes into a sound that is truly original, and that is a rarity these days. Give them a listen. You won't regret it. Fortunatley, for now, they are our little secret. --Kyle Hunter
