Over the past couple of years, Ned was selected as "Most Wanted" in the Falcon Ridge Folk Fest New Artist Showcase, and a finalist in the Rocky Mountain Folks Fest, The Minnesota Folk Fest NewSong Competition, and the RoseGarden Emerging Artist Competition.
"In The Park", a song from Ned's latest album, "Bloodties" recently won First Prize in the Singer/Songwriter category of the International Songwriting Competition.
So, the new album: "Bloodties." Mostly acoustic guitar, acoustic bass, drums, strings. Great musicians playing beautifully.
It's a theme album. Simply, it's about Grace.

An elegy for a difficult childhood and confused young adulthood.

An elegiac song cycle for childhood and young adulthood. On first hearing the CD, I thought there were a number of strong songs, and now with more and deeper listenings I think they are all strong. A bit of Lou Reed influence here, and the searing straighforward honesty of early solo Lennon. Massey structures the songs to take the listener on an emotional arc from the terror of an abused child ("The Car Swerved," "Must Be Bad"), to the resultant destructively confused ennui of the teenager ("In the Park"), to a sharp questioning of the ways of the world and religious belief "Slave," "Patrick O'Daugherty"), to a final reckoning of what it means to become an adult and a letting go of the past ("Angry Old White Man," "Blood Ties"). The cycle ends with a hopeful, wonderfully goofy finale. A really fine work that reminds me in a few ways of Reed's great "Magic and Loss."
