Album Notes

"Neilson Hubbard constructs the sort of aching pop songs many attempt, but few execute so well.” Alternative Press

Nashville based singer/songwriter Neilson Hubbard got his start fronting the mid-period Feelies-like This Living Hand (formerly Spoon). After that group split up in 1996, Hubbard returned to his native Jackson, Mississippi and released his first solo album, 1997's The Slide Project on Adam Duritz’s E Pluribus Unum label. A Kinks-y blast of indie guitar pop, The Slide Project sounded like nothing Hubbard had done before, and it proved to be an aberration. After signing with Parasol Records, Hubbard released the heartbreakingly sad, musically translucent Why Men Fail in April 2001. He followed this up in 2003 with the release of Sing Into Me, also for Parasol.

Neilson moved to Nashville, opened Mr. Lemons’ Studio, continued producing records for artists such as Garrison Starr, Glen Phillips, Matthew Ryan, Amelia White, Michelle Malone, Kate York, Jeremy Lister, Matthew Perryman Jones, and others.

In 2004 Matthew Ryan approached Neilson Hubbard about a collaboration, which could result in an interesting self-distributed release for fans. The collaboration was much more successful than expected and Strays Don't Sleep was formed with Brian Bequette, Billy Mercer and Steve Latanation.

In the Autumn 2005 Strays Don't Sleep's debut self-titled was released in the UK on One Little Indian.
Strays Don't Sleep was released to great reviews from Timeout, Uncut, The Sunday Express and the The Times. The success in Europe helped secure a US release. Added promotion came via placement in the hit CW drama One Tree Hill. "For Blue Skies", and was included on the soundtrack. Strays Don't Sleep toured the UK with Josh Rouse to support the album, and was officially disbanded in mid-2006.

In 2007 Neilson co-wrote 4 songs with Matthew Perryman Jones for Jones’ album Throwing Punches in the Dark, again acting as producer. One of those titles, the plaintive “Save You” was included in the sci-fi series Kyle XY and the Grey’s Anatomy spin-off Private Practice.

Neilson’s latest release, I Love Your Muscles, was co-produced by Neilson and Richard Mclaurin and recorded live at the House of David Studio in Nashville. I Love Your Muscles is the culmination of Neilson’s experience to date, on both sides of the soundboard, and contains rich collaborations with past and present writing, producing and performing partners.
