notes

Tengo Ranchito, released in May 2007, is a collection of
13 new songs in the folk/blues traditions. Combining acoustic guitars, vocal harmonies, mandolin, fiddle, and Dobro proves an irresistible combination in the telling of these 14 tales. Backed by ace musicians Orville Johnson, Paul Elliot, Jeff Simmons and Chris Leighton these songs come to life. The great Alice Stuart shares vocals on the classic "Satisfied Mind".
"Small Town Girl" brings to life the story of yearning to escape, "Troubled Love" haunts with it's aching slide guitar and Hammond B-3 organ, "Light On The Shore" offers up the solace of hope, and "She's Lucky" is a honky-tonk tale of a good luck girl.
John is a Seattle based guitarist/songwriter/producer and offers this, his second full length release for listeners who enjoy a roots and traditional style of music. A mostly acoustic record, Tengo Ranchito does feature telecasters, lap steel and drums at times creating an infectious groove when the tunes call for it.

  • Wow What a good record
    author: Tom Petersen

Wow, what a good record. Old hand John Nelson sounds great, the playing is crisp, and the songs are endlessly engaging. It's nearly Country Rock, with the addition of drums and some brushes across a Tele and an Epi archtop on several tunes. The one cover, "Satisfied Mind", and the lead off "Small Town Girl" rock pretty well too, but while the whole record maintains a good groove, Nelson usually gets the job done acoustically. The title cut is an intricate story, and the next song, "Light On The Shore" is hushed and hopeful. It just gets better from there - one dreamy mix of marvelous musicianship mated to thoughtfully wrought stories after another. And whereas Nelson's last outing, a duet with with Max Paul Schwennsen, was an exuberantly rough record of tub-thumpin' and fishin' harmonies, Tengo Ranchito is spankin' clean and Nelson works hard to get things just so. Oh, Boy does he! - Tom Petersen (Victory Music November 2007)

  • I'm really digging this album
    author: MJ Bishop

This CD has been in constant rotation on my MP3 player since I bought it early last May. The instrumentation suits every song - from the mournful violin on Small Town Girl to the hopeful Dobro on Ruby & Pearl. John is a master on guitar and has included one of his lovely instrumentals (Wysteria) on this disc. Angel and Lyndsey are a delicious treat to my ears.
