LINER NOTES FOR JOHN NEMETH “COME AND GET IT”
By Bob Margolin Senior Editor Blues Revue Magazine and guitarist for the late great Muddy Waters

“Out of the Blue” and “Old Soul” are the expressions that keep running through my mind as I listen to John Nemeth’s Come and Get It. If you hear these songs on the radio for the first time, you’ll presume you’re listening to one of the ‘50s Rhythm and Blues legends. If you know a lot about music, it will drive you nuts that you can’t identify the singer, because he must be one of the great ones. You hear vocalisms that remind you of Ray Charles or Junior Parker or Fats Domino, but it’s not them. So you’ll stop whatever you’re doing and wait ‘til the DJ tells you who’s singing. John WHO!?!

You’ll do what it takes to find out who John Nemeth is, and you’ll crack up when you find that he’s a young white man from Idaho and that this recording was made in the 21st Century. His demographics are ironic because this “Old Soul” has arrived “Out of the Blue,” not from a potato. John Nemeth is a natural-born Bluesman, and he proves it with every note he sings, shaping each one with emotion, taste and inspiration. As with the best singers, every phrase delivered is just right, neither over-sung nor under-powered. The subtle inflections and references to masterful singers bring fresh surprises with repeated listening. John Nemeth makes it sound easy.

I remember hearing Muddy Waters for the first time on the radio and being knocked out by the human Heaven and Hell in his voice. I was amazed that the slide guitar on the song was just as powerful, so it made sense when I found out it was Muddy playing it. In the same way, John’s expressive Blues harp playing answers his voice and fulfills his songs when he solos. As Muddy found a musical soul-mate in harp player Little Walter, John Nemeth has found one in celebrated contemporary Blues Guitarist Junior Watson. Junior stands out from the pack of today’s finest Blues guitar players, always revealing the essence of a song and crafting the perfect stylistic touch and tone. In 2004, Junior was nominated for a W.C. Handy Award for best Blues guitar player. The Blues World appreciates Junior, but nobody admires him more than other Blues guitar players. When he plays with John, they inspire each other, and one plus one equals way more than two.

John Nemeth, in addition to singing and playing so well, also found the fine players for this album, chose cover songs that showcase his depth, wrote original songs that stand proudly next to those covers, and arranged and produced this album. As with his vocal and harp performance, there’s no evident explanation for how he’s accomplished this, given his youth and today’s musical climate. It’s a gift from “Out of the Blue,” from and “Old Soul,” that he’s passing on to us. Come and Get It.

"Definitely one of the best club shows that I've ever seen. John Németh is simply the Blues artist that I feel is most deserving of more recognition. Check the man and his band out whenever you might get the chance."
Don "T-Bone" Erickson, Founding Editor of Blues Wax, 2004

"Boy! John Németh can really belt it out!"
Charlie Musslewhite, 2004

"I remember telling friends up North in '80 that they should go see Stevie Ray Vaughan, but they weren't impressed because he wasn't famous yet. It will give me great pleasure to say, "I told you so!" about John Németh. You'll see."
Bob Margolin, Blues Revue Magazine, Dec/Jan 2005

"Definitely one of the finest new artist performing Blues in the country today. Catch him now so you can say you saw him in the early years of his soon-to-be giant career!"
Greg Johnson, Blues Notes, 2004

"The show stealer of the afternoon was a vocalist with as many octaves as humanly possible or so it seemed. Either John Németh is one of the greatest vocalists in the world or this was the best performance of his life, or both. Write down his name, you will hear about him for many years to come."
Bob Horn, President, Washington Blues Society 2004

Bio
John Németh is a traditional Blues singer whose style resembles that of B.B. King, Ray Charles and Junior Parker. His decade long career has found him opening for Robert Cray, Keb Mo', and Earl Thomas. Performing major music festivals around the United States, Scandinavia, and Canada as both a featured artist of the Junior Watson Band and fronting his band the Jacks has brought him critical acclaim. The Cascade Blues Association selected Nemeth as a crowd favorite at the Portland Waterfront Blues Festival in 2002, and the Washington Blues Society called him the show stealer at the Winthrop Rhythm and Blues Festival in 2003. He is considered a topnotch harp blower. Greg Johnson of Blues Notes writes, "John Németh possesses rich harmonica tone that easily brings to mind Sonny Boy Williamson and Little Walter."

"Come And Get It" is Nemeth's latest release, and features the Junior Watson Band. The album has received rave reviews and is currently climbing the independent blues radio charts. Bob Margolin writes, "John Németh is a natural-born Bluesman, and he proves it with every note he sings, shaping each one with emotion, taste and inspiration. The subtle inflections and references to masterful singers bring fresh surprises with repeated listening."

  • Boise Bluesman hits Big Time
    author: www.boisee.com

Boise Bluesman-John Nemeth's CD *Come and Get it* has been released! Went to CD Baby and had a listen. The first thing locals will notice is that several of the songs are familiar. Although the arraignment is cleaner and lyrics have change a bit, it is great fun to hear old “Fat John and Frim Fram” standards like “Romance Without Finance. John is big time, BIG TIME. With Junior Watson at his side John’s powerful voice and harp playing, swing, bop, and jump to make this disc great fun. Buy this disc!

Nice selection of tunes and a knock-out performance by all!

  • A must have disc!

There is a big difference between singing blues songs and testifying the blues. John Nemeth is not just a blues singer, he’s a bluesman. His voice is deep and sensual, sometimes sweet and sometimes sharp as a knife. His harp playing also impresses - the tone is fat and his technique is imaginative. Together with one of the tightest bands around John Nemeth has recorded one of the best blues and classic r'n'b discs out on the market. It's a must have CD!

  • Best modern day R&B record, and Junior's guitar adds the final touch.
    author: Donald Durham

The different style of vocals on each song make this Cd unique. Junior Watson's guitar playing is very greasy, creative and pure at the same time. The mix is rushed slightly but this add's more raw emotion to the music and bring's out the finest in the rhythm section. I would reccommend this Cd to anyone and everyone who can appreciate the labor of love these musicians project on Come And Get It.

  • Great music

John's talent is evident in "Come and get it". His vocal range is seemingly unlimited and his harmonica sings for itself!!

  • An incredible record by an incredible artist
    author: Fang Tian

Wow!!!!!!!!!! I bought this record based on the ad in blues revue....I feel like I owe the magazine money! The album starts off kicking with Magic Sam's she belongs to me and is fantastic all the way through....Rod Piazza and other harp players with limited vocal ranges should be afraid, very afraid!

  • Nothing short of amazing!

I'll be greatly suprised(and disappointed)if this CD isn't a WC Handy nominee next year!

  • Probably the blues album of the year
    author: Thomas Andersen

Wow!! This is nothing short of a revelation. John Nemeth has gone and made what will most probably be the contemporary blues CD of the year. Nemeth is a triple threat - unbelievable vocals, masterful harp and some serious songwriting skills. You will not believe the vocals on this album. Nemeth screams, cryes, pleads, moans and shouts on tunes varying from jump, Chicago-blues, soul and then some. Backing him on this incredible album is the wonderful Junior Watson and his regular band. That means some astonishing guitar solos beefing up an already brilliant album. And just when you think things could not get better - you realize that many of the best tunes on this album are originals, which sound like classics from the 50s. To boot, the sound on the album is vintage extraordinaire, making you think these are some newly discovered gems from the golden age of blues and soul. I buy 100 blues albums a year, and believe me, this is one of the best I've bought in ages.

  • Wonderful stuff
    author: Mary Ann

We've been playing this CD non-stop ever since we got it, when John played his first show here in town. Great tunes, awesome singing, harp and guitar. John's vocals are easily in the league of our other two favorite "blued eyed soul-blues" singers, Darrell Nulisch and Tad Robinson. This is the kind of stuff that makes me believe that the blues is still alive and kicking. You will not regret buying this CD.

  • John Nemeth delivers again!
    author: Mike K

John's follow up to "Jack of Harps" delivers on all counts. His vocals and harp work are, as always, not just impressive, but musical and true to the genre. This latest album shows that John has studied the masters, and the phrasing of his solos, the delivery of his vocals show it. These songs have been honed over the last couple of years of John touring with his own band, with the Jacks, and with Junior Watson. As someone who's been watching John since he was too young to play in Boise, Idaho's bars, I consider this his best so far, and as much better than Jack of Harps as it was better than Harmonica Frenzy. Junior Watson may well be part of the reason. John's prior bands have been competent, but the guitar players haven't been of Watson's caliber. Watson, often noodling way off track in concert and in his own music in my opinion, lays down some great work on this album. Free of the pressure of being the flamboyant frontman and having to carry all the weight, Watson plays the role of lead guitarist well and his riffs are timely and not overdone. As is becoming John's trademark, there are some off-beat covers on this album, but he owns them, no doubt in part due to his time spent playing with his jazz ensemble the Frim Fram Four (made partly of the old Three Slims backing band from Harmonica Frenzy). I can't pick a favorite from this album--there is no clunker track to be found, but the title track may just be the winner with John's raucus harp tone and perfect vocal inflection backed by a barrelhouse piano and Watson's punctuating guitar work. The opening "She Belongs to Me" is a vocal workout for John, and as anyone who's seen him live can attest, there's no gimmick there- it's all Nemeth's voice coming through with no production trickery. The best thing about this album is it shows where John is now, and hints at where he's going, which is nowhere but up.
