notes

Neva Small sings songs from her lifetime of starring appearances on and off Broadway on this most unusual CD compilation.
"My Place In the World" includes premiere recordings from the scores of Broadway's best songwriters, including music and lyrics by Bob Merrill, Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Schwartz, Hoagy Carmichael, Jerry Bock, Sheldon Harnick, Amanda McBroom, Jacques Levy, Ken Jacobson, Rhoda Roberts, Marilyn and Alan Bergman, Sammy Fain and G. Wood. Musical visits are paid to the scores of "Henry, Sweet Henry," "The Prince of Grand Street" and "Mass."
Neva, who is best known for her portrayal of Chava, the third daughter in the movie musical "Fiddler on the Roof," includes on this one-of-a-kind CD a rare duet with the late great Dizzy Gillespie on trumpet and vocals in a bebop version of "Matchmaker, Matchmaker."
The entire collection has been lovingly produced by Broadway's own Walter Willison with arrangements by Fred Barton, Horace Ott and Richard Sudhalter.

Listen and enjoy as Neva sings theater history especially for you!

  • Utterly irreplaceable

When I opened up this c.d. I knew it was something special. I instantly saw the Hirschfield on the cover and could feel that I had found a diamond in the rough. Once I had listened to the c.d. three times in a row I was in awe of its power. I am deeply touched by Neva’s voice. Her alluringly delicate delivery in “Peace Ice Cream” perfectly blends with the sassy oomph that you can sense in “You’ve got to taste all the Fruit”. This c.d. is perfectly woven and fits into many genres in the music world. Every time I hear the first interlude of the c.d. it brings a smile to my face. I am touched by Neva’s outstanding voice and unparalleled talent! P.S. The booklet is a great and interesting read.

  • Great vocals on songs I probably wouldn't have heard otherwise.

After listening to the sound clips at Neva's website, I knew that I had to order the cd. And while my musical interests don't always include the type of music here, Neva's voice and unique style on this cd allowed me to completely enjoy each of the songs included. I would definitely recommend My Place In The World to anyone who has ever felt an emotion at some point in their lives, because Neva basically hits on the nerve for a variety of different feelings with each track on the cd.

  • NEVA'S PLACE IN YOUR WORLD
author: Thom Heinrichs - Long Beach, CA

Where to begin? Having Neva Small's voice back in your head after all these years is a supreme treat for those of us who have already worn out our first CD of "Henry, Sweet Henry." Yep, "Here I Am" is here, sung in a voice that is a little more husky, a little more mature, certainly wiser, but that's a good part of the magic of these performances. Listen to "The Portrait" and hear a heart break, or "Peach Ice Cream" for some soulful redemption. And how wonderful to finally have "Show Me Where the Good Times Are," and of course the beautiful "My Place in the World" in the definitive performances from a lady who will take you on an enchanted journey with her. Neva knows these songs. You should know Neva.

  • A treasure trove of forgotten songs sung by the wonderful Neva Small.
    author: Eric

This is a gem of a CD, and Neva Small is a treasure. She presents for us a collection of (mostly) forgotten chestnuts from the trunks of either failed or otherwise overlooked musicals with which she was involved over the course of a career that began when she was but a child actress with a big voice. She makes each one of them matter, from the haunting "The Portrait" by Amanda McBroom (who also wrote "The Rose"), to the anthemic "My Place in the World" that brings the CD to a climactic close. It makes one mourn the loss of songs that we shall never hear, but cherish those included here. It also makes one wonder why this extraordinary singer and actress has not been so long out of the spotlight. Perhaps this CD will remind people that we need to hear and see more of her, for there is always a place in the world for such a talent.

  • Neval Small is a great singer, and always has been.
    author: Larry Blank

Neva Small is a great singer, always has been. Her CD MY PLACE IN THE WORLD is a wonderful presentation of Neva's talents. Singing/acting some truly wonderful and mostly unknown songs. Neva gives full value to the lyric and the beauty of these unknown melodies. A truly beautiful presentation and most enjoyable recording.
