Described as sounding like a Southern, self-taught Carole King by way of Rickie Lee Jones and Laura Nyro, Newland Moorefield adroitly deals out folk-jazz-pop piano with pure, strong, seasoned vocals. But while she may remind you of other artists, Newland's style is wholly original.
Born in the Appalachians, but now hailing from Austin, Texas, this raw singer/songwriter/piano player plays by no one else's rules. Her voice is haunting and emotional, but in many ways brings the listener to a more grounded space.
Moorefield writes stories that tell of lives lost, lives lived to the fullest, and lives still in-the-making. She brings you full circle, taking you through the colors and sounds inside trials and tribulations, but always reminding you--most often with cunning humor--of the power and radiance of human perseverance.
Threads of Mercury is becalming, but wide-awake, art. Its hook-driven combination of piano, cello, horns, and loop guitars moves between pop, folk, and jazz without missing a beat. Session and performing players provide a crisp, quality sound that's earthy, powerful, and full of emotion.

Refreshing and original.
author: Tim Lincoln
In a world of music filled with cliches and formulas where it is hard to tell one artist and/or one genre from the next, it is truly refreshing to find an artist who is confortable enough to be themselves. Calming and edgy all at the same time with honest lyrics and no gimmics, here is an artist who deserves some serious recognition and someone who should someday be recognized for her talent and honesty. The whole ensemble sounds tight and polished but not plastic. Keep up the great work. Looking forward to more.

Where the heart runs...
author: John Gough
...Newland has lived. From atmospheric wanderings around South First Street to upright upbraidings of disappointing lovers to imagistic invitations to "shoot the gap with me - we can neck for a while in Tennessee", this work has range. Listen with headphones--you won't want to miss the words and instrumentation. She features cello & strings, slide guitar, electric guitar mixes, trumpet, whistling, and her own rich piano work. By turns witty and moody, Newland has originality and a clear, unabashed presence.

Superb
author: Dave Asebrook
Describing this CD seems like I'm describing a person. It is playful, insightful, reflective, and inquisitive. Yet, the whole package blends together so wonderfully. Added to the talented song writing is a voice that simply grabs hold and envelops you. Toss this CD in your stereo, give it some volume, and you'll be impressed.
