Album Notes

Start with funny, quirky and satirical songs. Add in some terrific musicians, a wide variety of arrangements and top-notch production. The result is Howie Newman’s Trust Me, You’ll Like It, one of the most entertaining independent albums you'll ever hear. Backing Newman (acoustic guitar, vocals, harmonica) on this 13-song CD are some of the top names in the local music circuit, including Duke Levine, Billy Novick and Jim Gambino. This lively collection, which also includes four “serious” tunes, spans folk, rock, bluegrass, jazz, swing, country and just about everything in between. Newman takes a whimsical look at cell phones, the weather, Boston drivers, not-so-graceful aging and rock stardom. For sports fans, there are memoirs of an aging softball fanatic (“Weekend Warrior”) and an ode to Doug Mientkiewicz. He even dabbles in love and relationships, examining middle age dating, daydreaming, skepticism and unfinished business. It’s funny, upbeat, warm and – best of all – fun to listen to. Give it a spin, you’ll like it.

Howie Newman is a musician who tells you some funny stories about life
author: Wildy's World
Trust Me, You’ll Like It is funny, sometimes poignant, and entertaining. It runs the gamut from bizarre (an ode to former Red Sox first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz) to sweet (“Middle Age Love”), with all stops in between. Some might almost call this a comedy record, but I think a better assessment would be to say that Howie Newman is a musician who tells you some funny stories about life. Most anyone over 30 will understand the sentiment of “Weekend Warrior”, whether you are one or not. “Never Say Never” is a look at growing up, and how we sometimes we pass by our greatest pleasures in the name of being mature. Re-discovering those pleasures can re-kindle the fire for life. Trust Me, You’ll Like It is a mirror in which we all might find a little of ourselves, our family, and our day-to-day. The music is excellent and Newman has put together one of the best backing bands in the Boston scene. The songs are funny and warm. You’ll find yourself pulling this disc out from time to time when you need a step back. Definitely a keeper!

Satirical social commentary that is smart, witty and relevant
author: Sidehatch Vault
This guy is pretty funny, and he’s got some cool messages. The satirical social commentary is smart, witty and relevant. Plus, his musicians are stellar. Duke Levine (lead guitar), Paul Kochanski (bass) and Jeff Allison (drums) make up his main musical section, with Janet Feld and Jennifer Newman (his daughter) singing backups. Guest appearances by several other instrumentalists give his music interesting spice. His Steely Dan impersonation at the end of “Big in Belgium” is hilarious and dead on. I’m putting “Drivin’ in Boston is Drivin’ Me to Drink” on the next time I get pulled over for aggressive driving, and hopefully the cop will laugh enough to let me off. He’s downright funny and doesn’t need to use vulgarity to get a laugh, which is a nice change of pace. And even the most hardened metal band will appreciate the honesty of “Please Buy My Record.”

Barenaked Ladies meets Randy Newman
author: Brett Holmes, Lucid Forge
Isn't Howie Newman that guy that wrote the music for Toy Story? Almost! That was Randy Newman, however, there seems to be a similar representation going on here. The lyrically witty and hip emotional style reminds me much of animated soundtrack possibilities. Trust Me, You'll Like It is a 13-track project that lends its quirky composition to a listener's light mood. It's Barenaked Ladies meets Randy Newman.
