Album Notes

Nick Holmes first played with the musicians on Soulful Crooner while singing with White Elephant, the seventies jazz rock big band. This record was the solo record for Nick that followed that White Elephant double record collaboration. It still sounds good today, although in those days we didn't have digital yet. Mike Mainieri's production and arrangements are full honest from that period. It's a jazz record in many ways. Many of the songs have more key changes in the intros of the songs than Nick used on entire albums in the '80s and 90s. Nick learned his harmonic sense from these years with the jazzers, and his voice is in fine shape.

One ofd the great albums of it's time by one of the best singer/songwriters as well as the nicest guy ever. Great back-up by Hugh McCracken, David Bromberg and the others. Just erfect ! 'Grind It Out 'Strangers' and 'Never Really Know ' are particularly close to my soul. -jelly '09

I came across this album in 1973 when I was working as an early morning (3 to 6) Dj on KUOP in Stockton, CA. It quickly became one of my favorite albums of all time. I own a LP of this recording but I can't resist buying it in pristine condition. This album is a moody, atmospheric, love song. I'm also a huge fan of The Blue Nile and while it doesn't sound like them, it evokes the same feeling. Sample "Trying Too Hard" and then try to resist clicking the "BUY NOW" button.
