Nicci Canada’s debut album Twenty-Twelve is excellently refreshing. It has uniqueness of its own, blending gospel, soul and jazz. Her repertoire of songs embodies a richness of sound and melody. Nicci’s thought-provoking lyrics bring serenity along with clarifying essence. Her rich vocal quality in “Attraction” sparks a journey of a relationship reflection. I love her passion, talent and art in her genre. Her song “Love” is a combination of funk and jazz filled with meaningful words and a groovy sound to go along with it. “Make it do what it do baby”. Her finely tuned instrument caresses the senses, produces tempting soulful blues and swings with shear ease. Nicci sprinkles soft blues nuances in the vein of legendary Jazz singer, Sarah Vaughn. Also being late in the industry, she was born into some musical blood. Her grandfather, singer James McGhee, sang with a local quartet, the Roaring Trumpets. Naturally, she grew up singing and harmonizing with her family. The jazz that she and the band present in this freshman offering is just wonderful, and she creates it with her own artistic flair – it’s just really fun and entertaining music.
