Album Notes

About the CD from All About Jazz:

Nick Longo (sax and vocals) has just released his debut CD. It is entitled This Is and it is all original music written by him except for one cut written by his father John “Pops\" Longo. Nick did all the arranging and produced the CD himself.
He describes himself as high-energy jazz meets R&B. When you get the CD, pay close attention because it is very entertaining. There are a lot of little surprises that will pass you by when you just leisurely listen. It\'s mostly an instrumental CD, but there are vocal elements throughout. There are 12 songs all together with two of those being vocal tunes.

About the artist:

Nick has been playing professionally his whole life, holds a degree in Jazz Studies from Georgia State University, and works consistently playing and writing all genres of music.

Nick has worked with jazz greats such as Nick Brignola, Randy Brecker and most recently with Earl Klugh opening for Chaka Khan.

He has worked on stage as well as recorded with such well-knowns as Greg Allman, Don Henley, Ray Charles, Al Kooper, Charlie Daniels, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Francine Reed, The Coasters, The Shirelles, as well as many local Atlanta bands when not working with his own group.

Creative Loafing

This Is, the self-produced debut album from Atlanta jazzman Nick Longo, lays down a foundation of driving cosmopolitan jazz that screams midtown Manhattan, but foreshadows the possibility of a fresh, identifiable uptown Atlanta style, if he chooses to pursue it. Longo\'s rhythm-driven lead vocals are featured prominently on two tracks, but up front on alto and baritone sax is where Longo marks his turf on the mostly instrumental disc. His dad, John \"Pops\" Longo, plays tenor sax on nearly half the disc and wrote the penultimate track, \"Cool Breeze,\" the sole tune not penned by Nick himself. Together, they serve up high energy and often boppy funk with hints of manic R&B.

I love the CD. Full of pleasant surprises. Nick and his skilled side men manage to bring the energy of their live performance into the polish of the studio. Hard bop-funk-progressive-fusion-acid jazz-blues you should own so you can say you heard them when.
