Don't Hold Back When You Sing Your Song ...Nick Masullo "The Finest Thing"
So this songwriter/singer writes and so he delivers on "Some Kind of Sign," his first and very tasty CD. Awards already garnered by both the songwriter and the songs attest to the excellence of this offering and the high regard in which both are held by the music communities of the Ozarks and neighboring states.
Notable fellow Ozark musicians join in on the music, offering wholesome and rich influences on both the superlative instrumentation and the laying down of a rich backdrop of harmony vocals. The music is all drawn in the warm kinship of these practiced, caring musician/friends.
It's easy to praise the musicianship of this collection, put together with devotion and skill in an honest, understated production style by Emily Kaitz, who let the music speak for itself and to us.
Opening with "Hang Up Your Phone," an irreverent and hilarious commentary on our society's cellular obsession, the songs move us through a near-perfect mix of introspection (Morning Deer, Mighty Fine Line, Just Hasn't Happened); relationships and love (More Than I Used To, The Finest Thing, All About You, Love is Gonna Find You, Something I Said, I've Got Your Number, The Last Thing I Saw); and spirituality (Bill's Blue Dodge Van, Animal Next Time, Show Some Heart).
Like a book of short stories, these lyrics and tunes give us a welcome opportunity to look at life thru the eyes of a caring, reflective man, Nick Masullo, to whom both words and fine musicianship matter. Beautiful liner photos and notes introduce you to the artist, but always you will come back to the music for it is the backbone of this collection, both for casual, background times or those when you give it your full and undivided attention.
I personally recommend this work to all who have yet to meet Nick and his music as well as those of us who have enjoyed and believed in it for a long and privileged time. Listen closely; hear the honesty. And come back to it often.
