Recorded during a two-night stand in July, 2008, Nick Moss & the Flip Tops’ new release Live at Chan’s: Combo Platter No. 2 is the highly anticipated follow-up to the Chicago blues band’s 2006 album, Live At Chan’s (Vol. 1), also recorded live at the venerable haven of Chinese food and blues in Woonsocket, Rhode Island. This time, the band ups the ante by bringing in special guest, fellow Chicago blues stalwart Lurrie Bell, named “Blues Artist of the Year” and “Most Outstanding Guitarist” in the 2008 Living Blues magazine awards. Moss & Bell team up for some massive blues guitar interplay that recalls a Saturday night on Chicago’s Southside, and the excitement and energy that these two guitarists bring to this set is palpable!

REVIEWS:
“3 1/2 STARS! (Moss has) reached his maturity, supplying a tough-minded precision and inventiveness (to the music)…”
– Downbeat
“Moss and co. serve up a second set of live music, replete with Moss’ fine soloing and stunning command of Chicago Blues.”
– Vintage Guitar
“Whether it’s the acoustics or the egg rolls, Moss & Co. eat up Chan’s. A modern torchbearer of Chicago blues, Moss—joined on four songs by fellow South Side guitar wizard Lurrie Bell — and his ace band put these 10 high-energy cuts over the top.”
– Boston Herald
“Longtime admirers know what to expect: plenty of no-nonsense blues with a minimum of ‘blooze’ posturing and an abundance of taste, dexterity, imagination and deep feeling. Moss’ tone is aggressive yet clear; his chordal string-shivers evoke Otis Rush in his prime, and his leads snake and shimmer their way to
glory with a distinctive blend of forward-thrusting impetus and playful yet focused exploratory rambunctiousness.”
– Living Blues Magazine
“The versatility and musicianship of the Flip Tops is at times spell-binding… Transport yourself to North Clark or Halsted in Chicago or recall a night on Chicago’s Southside. That feeling and those sounds are here in all their glory.”
– The Alternate Root
“The band starts off with a hot appetizer, the original instrumental “Spareribs and Chopsticks,” then delivers a main course loaded with spice! It’s definitely a full course that leaves no room for dessert, but will leave you wanting more!”
– Americana Roots.com | Defining Roots Music
“Chicago blues doesn’t get much better than this. This is another winning set from one of the best blues bands working today.”
– Phoenix Blues Society
“The power in this band is their strongest factor, with a dynamic punch that rattles the speakers. One of the best live albums of the year, guaranteed.”
– BluesSource.com
“(Nick Moss) takes the Chicago vibe with him to the east coast to let them feel another helping of what the hawk can do.
It’s hard to know if Rhode Island gets parties like this often but this is the kind where they tear the roof off the sucker.”
– Midwest Record
“Name one other touring blues bands whose members can switch one instrument for another like a game of musical hot potato…This one is a must-hear for guitar lovers — and for anybody who wants to hear a truly exceptional example of the magic of a live blues performance.”
– Crossroads Blues Society

Second episode from Chan's. The first one had Mike Welch on guest spot, this one is with Lurrie Bell. Another great moment. The band is full of musicianship and feeling and the songs are great. What else do you need ?

for me this album is already one of the few BEST albums in 2009. Stunning guitar play of Nick and Lurrie Bell (he's one of the Best anyway).
My favorite is "Five Long Years" what a great performance!!! almost 80 minutes playtime with only 10 songs, you can imagine how long the tracks are. My No.1 for the Album of the Year!
