Nicky Click started making music a year ago when she bought a used drum machine for a good price at the right time. She was really sick of listening to music and never trying to create it herself. She realized that her journals and diaries from years before were all amazing songs just waiting to happen. She realized that putting her feelings, pain, happiness and fear into words would help her to feel more whole as a human being. So that is when things started to change and she started to feel alive in ways she never had before, and suddenly she had an outlet,a means to express herself, a way to communicate wth others. Through music and songwriting, she has found an empowering way to share her convictions and be heard.
Nicky Click's music is all about intention and honesty.
Part of this intention is the constant struggle to remain continually real, pure and vunerable in the presentation, performance and product of her art. Through her live performance and her recordings she touches on personal subjects such as relationships and the struggles of finding balance and staying true to herself. She also speaks to the struggles (and rewards) around "performance identity" and "femme identity" at large through her lyrics. Through her art she is continually working on regaining power and control by consciously and willingly mirroring the image of her oppressors glare. She decides daily which image she wants to mirror. By performing and living in these identities, her intention is to reclaim any negativety or shame associated with these images. Her art is accessible because you can dance and move your body to it while you think about it and live it.
No Nicky Click performance will ever be the same. She has been seen performing at all male hip hop shows, at house shows in a sceene set up to be her bedroom, in excercise gear with a full backing dance troupe, snd in the dark with only a video projector of her mothers picture to light the room while she sings her songs. Most often she performs in clubs and bars in a "lets dance to music" type of enviornment. She is currently working on creating an enviornment where performer and audience feel equally safe and included to espress and take part in the show.
What is next for Nicky Click? She will be on a month long east coast tour this summer, including stops in Boston to perform at Trani-Wreck with New York band Da Lipstyxxx, as well as LadyFest Olympia, then off to an extensive westcoast tour with the canadian hip hop party band, Stinkmitt, with stops including Vancover, BC's pride night and shows with bay area bands such as Veronica Lipgloss and The Evil Eyes, and Katastrophe. Fall plans include performaces at The PeaceOUt Northwest Festival and at Ladyfest Brighton.
This art is about her. The jig is up. She is a bi-product of an American Society which pushes people (especially women) to be self obsessed, and with a whole lot of awareness and confidence, she is showing herself to you, inviting you into her bedroom and mind for alittle while. welcome! you're already a member.
