Album Notes

The legendary female folksinger Sandy Denny moved the hearts of many in the sixties and seventies. Since 1967 she was during periods a member of the famous British folkrock group Fairport Convention. She also sang in bands such as Fotheringay and The Strawbs and made solo albums. In 1978 at the age of 31 she died unexpectedly of a brain hemorrhage. Today her music is still very much alive.

Linde Nijland is one of the two singers of the Dutch female folk duo 'Ygdrassil'. In 2002 Linde Nijland has started a musical project around Sandy Denny. She's come up with a performance in which her love for Sandy Denny's music can be felt. The Denny repertoire fits Linde very well, not only because of the two kindred voices, but also due to the themes and emotional contents of the songs. Linde draws from the entire Denny-oeuvre, singing Sandy Denny 's own material, several traditionals and an occasional song, written by others.

In the project "Linde Nijland sings Sandy Denny" Linde is being accompanied by three folkmusicians: Eddy de Jonge (bass, guitar), Bert Ridderbos (guitar, cittern, accordion) and Jannet Fink (violin).
In 2003 and 2004 the project has been booked by several appealing festivals and venues in The Netherlands and Germany such as the International Folkwoods Festival Eindhoven, Folk Festival Zwolle and the Arsenaal theater Vlissingen and the Folkfrühling Festival in Venne. Other gigs are planned in the Netherlands and Belgium.
The project runs till summer 2005.

REVIEWS

A great surprise, true to Sandy's greatness, yet original.

I received Linde's CD as a gift and it is wonderful. As a Sandy purist I'm suspicious of interpreters and hard to please, so this collection is a great surprise. Linde's voice is lovely and well-suited to the material she's chosen. Her stylings are subtle and just different enough from Sandy's to add something fresh. When Linde changes an inflection or note, it's inventive and benefits the song. I enthusiastically recommend this CD, especially to all those sceptics like me who think Sandy can't be well interpreted.

not the first lp solely devoted to sandy denny songs, but an excellent one indeed.Top marks for the choice of songs, including the enigmatic "No End" and "Autopsy".Marvellous version of "Who Knows Where the Time Goes", but for me the highlight is her wonderful reading of "What is true".Top marks, Linde!Very brave following in the late great Sandy's footsteps, and this is a glorious success.Only failure is the traditional "This train" which really doesnot suit Linde's voice. But a must buy for all sandy fans.

Linde is simply an excellent, incredible singer, and she's chosen truly great Denny songs to cover. Everything is done with love, sincerity and taste. This is the kind of music that the world needs today - soulful, relaxing, full of warmth and humanity, both humble and full of selfconfidence, a true piece of art... Covering Denny is bound to either end in a total fiasco or - if you're able to carry it off, as Linde is - in a total triumph. Which is what this record is, really. Give it a listen!
