A little background to the music.
Afternoon Sketches came into being over a few years. Each piece depicts an event or a time in my life. Some just try to capture the feel or the mood of a place.
From the age of sixteen the guitar was my constant companion. I always traveled everywhere with it. What others paint with strokes of a brush or describe with strokes of a pen, I tried to depict with strokes of the strings.
Bastia was started when I was on assignment in Mexico. I felt a strong sense that I had places to go and things to do. Soon after, I was delivering a new airplane to Africa and was forced down on a small island in the Mediterranean by some terrific thunderstorms. Holed up in an old hotel in Bastia, I finished the piece as the great storm was raging overhead.
Other pieces reflect a more serene and contemplative mood. Dreamclouds draws on an idyllic scene of a beautiful mountain lake with an island of tall oaks and pines and white cotton clouds slowly drifting by.
Don CeSar was inspired by a grand hotel on a beautiful beach. The music sort of wafted up out of the easy elegance and surreal charm the place exudes on a hazy summer afternoon.
I always find comfort and solace in great beauty. I truly hope that I was able to impart some of that through these little sketches.
