Album Notes

Formed in Chapel Hill, North Carolina in 1988, Nikki Meets the Hibachi has toured the southeast, bringing their plaintive acoustic pop to clubs, colleges, coffeehouses, and listening rooms. Fortune smiled on these folkies, and Nikki Meets the Hibachi has had the opportunity to share the stage with some of the best musicians of the past few decades: Indigo Girls, The Violent Femmes, Ferron, Widespread Panic, Dillion Fence, and more. Recently regrouped after a decade-long hiatus, Elaine Tola and John Gillespie have a crop of new songs, a percussionist (Arturo Velasquez), and a CD recorded by veteran producer and North Carolina legend, John Plymale. If you like Back Around or Nikki Meets the Hibachi in general, you should also check out John Gillespie's solo album, Eternal Summer, also available here at CD Baby.

I'm officially addicted to this incredible album. It takes me to work and gets me through the long days in consulting. John Gillespie was my English teacher in high school :) This is a wonderful way to keep in touch also. NMTH, I hope you all are well! -Kriti

Finally!!!

I saw NMTH back around 1992 and bought a tape of the 'Bluest Sky' album. Later, a girl I dated made a copy of the tape and took the original, leaving me only the copy (why is it that things always seem to happen this way?). I listened to that tape for years (even splicing it back together after it broke) and eventually I found out that it was out of production, so I burned it from the spliced, copied tape onto a CD. Naturally, the sound quality was less than desired, but I still listened to it because, let's face it, these guys are fantastic! Every few years I would search them out to see if they re-released the original album and low and behold, not only do you get that, but you also get another FANTASTIC album with it for a WOW price (two albums for $15...can't beat it). If you haven't listened to NMTH, give it a shot...after a few listens, you'll be hooked! Hope the band decides to come back to Charleston, SC, but until then, GET THIS ALBUM!!!

As expected: great!

It's so nice to see another NMTH album after all these years. And they've done a great job of picking up right where they left off all those years ago. If you liked their earlier stuff or acoustic pop/rock in general, you will be very pleased with this CD. And how nice to have the "Bluest Sky" CD included as well. Two great albums for the price of one!

Nikki Meets The Hibachi's "Back Around"/"The Bluest Sky"
author: RONBERT

Acoustic artist Nikki Meets The Hibachi's CD "Back Around" showcases John Gillespie's smooth, commanding lead vocals blending with Elaine Tola's sweet harmonies that send their sound into the stratosphere. This CD generously includes 10 new songs as well as their 11-track acoustic-classic "The Bluest Sky" album from the early 90's. Of course, nothing can touch the magical gracefulness of "The Bluest Sky," but the best new cuts from "Back Around" are: #1 So Grateful (upbeat) #2 Not Half Of Us (melancholy) #3 Not Mending (therapeutic) #4 Lion's Share (catchy chorus) and #5 Hold On (exhibits a gorgeous, NMTH-classic bridge). The new material left me hungry for even more, however, which is a good thing. I look forward to more from the talented trio (incl. percussionist Arturo Velasquez). As far as the all-time greatest acoustic album "The Bluest Sky" is concerned, it includes an absolute heaven title cut. You would be out of your mind not to be incredibly touched by the title song (it is that affecting). From the "Outside Looking In," John and Elaine take us on a trip through acoustic music wonderland. "Shake Off The Cold" is incredibly warm and embracing with Elaine taking the lead vocal and John interjecting harmonies throughout when necessary and effectively. "Peacemaker" is a subtle beauty. John and Elaine offer "Love," which comes close to challenging "The Bluest Sky" as Nikki Meets The Hibachi's best song; every great band, including The Sundays, has a great song with "Love" in its title, and Nikki Meets The Hibachi is no exception to that rule. "The Veil" incorporates a memorable violin melody throughout that just adds to its natural beauty, as well as in the finale, the stripped down "Bigger," which wrapped up the original cassette. John and Elaine's overlapping harmonies are the best ever, and their sound is so intoxicating, even without alcohol! I am "So Grateful" to Elaine Tola for personally informing me of the new Nikki Meets The Hibachi recordings. Thank you immensely Elaine! I would recommend this entire worthwhile CD collection "Back Around"/"The Bluest Sky" for any serious, active music fan that enjoys eclectic genres. Nikki Meets The Hibachi is acoustic music at its best!
