Album Notes

A native Detroiter born in 1972, Tomeka Nicole - affectionately known as Nikki - began her singing career at the tender age of 5. Like many other musical performers, Nikki’s roots lie in her home church back in the early 80’s where she sang and directed the choir until she moved to Atlanta in 1995. Musically, Nikki has surprised many audiences with the size and quality of her sound. She has so much versatility in her voice, which can change styles starting with gospel, then jazz, to blues, then R & B, to neo soul. Vocally, she’s been compared to such artists as Stephanie Mills, Patti LaBelle, Aretha Franklin, Vicki Winans, Vanessa Bell Armstrong, and Nancy Wilson. Currently, Nikki is recording her freshman solo project entitled “A Different Kinda Praise”, due for release in the spring of 2008. Nikki also exercises her music ministry by leading the praise and worship team of her home church, Total Life Christian Ministries and by lending her voice to a many other venues and Christian fellowships.

Nikki on stage is a rare treat that is quickly becoming recognized. Nikki began acting in 1993 performing as “Dorothy” in a local production of “The Wiz”. Continuing in Atlanta, Nikki also performed in a few local productions called “Can I Get A Witness” and “Come Home”. Returning to Detroit in 1998, Nikki began making a regular appearance for the United States Postal Service Annual Black History Program, performing songs like “And I’m Telling You”, “Dr. Feel Good”, and the ever-popular James Brown hit, “I Feel Good”. Recently, Nikki has added impersonations to her list of talents and you can catch some these in her one-woman show, entitled “T-Cakes”. This show came to life on August 22, 2004 and brought back to life some of the experiences that made her become known as “T-Cakes” today.

If you’ve never heard her sing, you’ll be amazed. If you’ve never heard her minister, you’ll be inspired. If you’ve never seen T-Cakes on stage, you’ll be moved to tears while your side is splitting! Get to know her…you’ll be glad you did!
