Album Notes

The long awaited CD debut of the first solo album from Nile Rodgers from Chic. His sound here is definitely in that classic lean, mean mode -- lots of compressed guitar bits riffing over the rhythms, lots of thick, chunky bass (courtesy of Nile himself and Chic bassist Bernard Edwards) This is NOT your standard CHIC album, as Nile explores African rhythms- "Most Down", pays homage to the then still emerging hip-hop style- "Beet" and "It's All In Your Hands", and even throws in a naughty nursery-rhyme or two- "Yum-Yum".
Sarah Dash (Of the legendary Labelle) guests on the stripped-down beat-ballad "My Love Song For You". Song Titles include "Beet", "Get Her Crazy", "Yum Yum", "Rock Bottom", and "Most Down". CD also features 2 bonus tracks -- extended mixes of "Yum Yum" and title track "The Land Of The Good Groove".

Oh, you didn't know?

Chic as a group was at a sales decline at this time- the big disco backlash had happened and Chic were the poster children of that movement. But then a funny thing happened...all the rockers of that generation found themselves influenced by the guitar style and clean production of Nile Rodgers and his bass-playing partner Bernard Edwards. This CD is like a musical holy grail of sorts- it impressed the HELL out of David Bowie when he heard the demos- enough to ask Nile if he would produce HIS then upcoming album (and we all know how that turned out- extremely well). This is a true post-disco album. Filled with the musical soulful bedrock you expect of a member of Chic- but not afraid to explore other things happening at the time: hip-hop, punk, world music. I mean, it is all here. And it all sounds different- but cohesive all at once. Dig the guitar on Get Her Crazy....INSANE!! The sales may have declined, but the creativity did not. And this is one excellent, creative album. WELL DONE~!!
