Nita’s music has been described as “contemporary folk with a spoon full of blues and a twist of jazz”. Born and raised in Ottertail County, Minnesota, at age 8, her father taught her to play an old guitar using open tuning and a butter knife as a slide. She became one of that region’s most loved singer-songwriters. Earning her chops in the popular cover band “Slingshot” while still in her teens, Nita eventually moved on to success as a solo performer. She has appeared with Garrison Keiller (Prairie Home Companion) and been a repeat guest on Public Radio and TV stations across the country.
Nita’s songs have won national recognition from the Billboard Song Contest, The Hollywood Song Jubilee, and most recently, a 2006 Unisong Honorable Mention for “No One (Should Ever Feel This Way)”, one of the tracks on her latest CD “The Woodshed Album”. “One Spirit”, from 1998’s “Imagine That”, was a unanimous feature selection of the 2000 Campus Crusade for Christ International, and has been used by numerous churches, schools and music festivals nationwide. Grants from the Mcknight Foundation and Lake Region Arts council supported efforts to study at the Song School in Lyons, Colorado where she had the opportunity to work with Beth Neilson Chapman, Steve Seskin, Janis Ian, and Peter Himmelman.
Now living in Nashville, Nita continues her writing around singing demos and a performance schedule stretching from Tennessee to Minnesota. Nita’s debut CD “The Harvest” was released in 1995, followed by “Imagine That” in 1998, and “Halleluiah” (with Sarah Morrow and Connie Hill) in 2002. Her musical growth and incredibly diverse stylistic range is prominently displayed on 2008’s “The Woodshed Album”, an acoustically driven CD with a decidedly Bluegrass feel.
