First introduced in a 1958 Christmas song, the Little Drummer Boy marched so effortlessly into our lives and has made such a lasting impression upon our Christmas traditions that it is hard to imagine a time when he was not with us. Not since Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer has a new icon secured such a timeless place in our national culture so suddenly and completely. But who is the Little Drummer Boy, and what is the story that brings such an unlikely visitor to the quiet solitude of that holy birthplace and thrusts him to the near-scripture stature of “shepherds watching over their flocks” and “wise men from the East”. The Fourth Magus puts the Little Drummer Boy into context and weaves his story seamlessly into the fabric of the greatest stories ever told. This is a timeless treasure for children and adults, to be enjoyed year-round, but especially during Christmas.



About the Author

Noble Johnson, born in 1950, retired from the Army in 1999 after serving more than 27 years and reaching the rank of Colonel. When his family was young, his wife made a weekly practice of taking their two daughters to the community library for afternoon story time. This developed in them an insatiable appetite for stories. Not to be upstaged by the local librarian, Noble began creating and telling his daughters stories of his own. Before long his daughters were inviting their friends to hear their father’s wonderful stories and he developed a unique story-telling style. Over the years, his daughters, now grown with family interests of their own, encouraged him to write some his stories so they could be shared with others. The Fourth Magus is the first result of that encouragement.

I read or play books like this to my children all the time, but they have never responded to one like they responded to this one.  I have two boys and a little girl.  They all want to hear this story over and over.  At Christmas, I thought I was going to wear it out.  I know what I'm buying everyone as a Christmas present next year -- The Fourth Magus.  It so cleverly brings all my favorite Christmas stories together in one entertaining masterpiece, with a beautiful message about Christmas and faith.  This story should be part of everyone's Christmas tradition.  Can you tell I love it?!!

It moved me to tears..

This story just seems so natural and right.  The story of the Little Drummer Boy, told until now only in the famous song, comes to life in this story in a way that is both magical and touching.  I will be buying copies for everyone as Christmas presents.  I know I can give this story with pride and the knowledge that the person receiving it will fully enjoy it.  I highly recommend it for all ages.

Wonderful Story

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to The Fourth Magus.  We especially enjoyed watching our grandchildren as they listened intently to the story.  Mr. Johnson's narration  simply captivated the children.  I highly recommend The Fourth Magus for any parent of young children or grandparent!
