notes
Noella Choi is a Chinese-Canadian Singer-Songwriter with a soulful and sultry voice. Her interest in music began at a young age leading to her exploration and participation of all types of music including Pop, Jazz, Musicals, Opera, and Concert Bands. She had won several contests such as “The 1999 New Talent Singing Contest.”
Her love of music lead to an Honours Bachelor of Music Degree in Theory and Composition from the University of Western Ontario where she also majored in Voice. After graduating, she worked as a Music Director at TVB (Television Broadcast Hong Kong) where she completed over 200 episodes of the Sitcom, Virtues of Harmony I. In addition to being a Music Director, Noella also provided vocals for Songs used in TVB series such as "Life Begins At Forty,” “Good Against Evil” and most recently, “Fire Dance, Yellow Sand.”
In 2003, she returned to Toronto and began work on a full length Independent Album called “Restless” which was released in 2004 to very positive reviews.
Drawing from contemporary influences and playful in practicing her craft, through many subtle nuances, this love of the independent creation can be heard in her music. Often described as an edgier Sarah McLachlan, Jewel, and Tori Amos, Noella Choi is a true DIY in a unique Pop/Folk/Rock Style.

Strongly moving and visually stimulating music.
author: Wing WongOriginally saw Noella's CD on iTunes and bought the track "Blossom". Strong and moving melody made me wonder why Noella hasn't been raised to a higher level of visibility in the media's eyes. Noella's CD is definitely worth the money. - Wing Wong wingedpower@gmail.com http://www.polygon-comics.com
WOW!
author: Kristina MiyasakiThese songs caught me completely off guard! The lyrics are real, amazing how the cd was mixed, your voice has a fresh quality that doesn't make it sound too much like pop music, but makes you want to hear more. Noella, your love of music is heard and felt in this cd and that's what makes you and it so incredible!

author: Robert NaseChoi draws from contemporary influences and is playful in practicing her craft. Through many subtle nuances, this love of the independent creation of music can be heard and therefore extends the replay value of Restless. A typical track is wild in its variety of sound. At first listen, each song is harmonic, simple and clear. Only with many listens can a track be fully appreciated. Take, for instance, the bell-like sounds three minutes into “Crossroads” or the combination of strings, keyboards, and the brittle tones of a harpsichord throughout “Heartbeat." This background accompaniment to Choi’s songs is an act of fine-tuning which augments her already powerful hooks. Despite being "not the best lyricist" by her own admission, Choi’s words provide a powerful contrast to her music. A sample: "I gave my soul and took a fall into a chasm of endless lies." Here’s another: "Shattered dreams you have been walking on Already scarred your soul. Take a piece and cut yourself loose Free from this tangled mess ..." And it’s all like this: a constant message of doubting, feeling insignificant, shattered dreams, and falling painfully into chasms. In another’s hands, the adolescent pain of every line could have amounted to an atmosphere akin to a funeral parlor. Yet Choi’s voice is cheerful and elegantly graces her compositions, thus lightening the weight of her thematic choices to the point at which this album would be difficult to honestly describe as dark. This feat alone is an impressive accomplishment, yet another facet of Choi’s debut gem.
Noella Choi's a talented woman, you need to check her out.
author: Collected Sounds - Amy LotsbergNoella Choi's first solo release, but that doesn't mean she's new to the music scene. After graduating from college (with honors) the Toronto native spent some time in Hong Kong working as the musical director for a Hong Kong television station where she worked on a sitcom called "Virtues of Harmony" as well as composing and singing for television commercials. "Restless" is a true DIY project. She wrote, performed, recorded and mixed all the songs here. The result is a lovely adult pop sound. Choi's voice is pretty and pleasing without being sugary sweet. The songs are inoffensive smooth melodic pop. Nothing wild and crazy, but pleasant all the same. She alternates playing guitar and piano and I, of course, prefer the piano pieces, but they're all good songs. She claims she's not a great lyricist and it took her a long time to come up with words to her music, but I think they go together very nicely, You'd never know it was difficult for her. Noella Choi obviously a talented woman, and if you like adult contemporary pop you need to check her out. Stand out songs: "Goodbye", "Crossroads" and "Lost".
Amazing CD! Noella Choi is so talented!
author: SuzyI've been a fan of Noella's music for a few years now and I have to say, I'm so happy she finally released this CD and that there is a way for us Europeans to buy it (I am from Holland). The CD is amazing. Not often does one come across a CD where every song is something that you can listen to over and over again. Something you want to play in the car on a sunny day with the windows open all the way or the top down while singing along to the songs loudly. Also, she claims she's not be the best lyricist, but I have to disagree. Every song is pure top notch quality! My favourite tracks are "Restless", "Impossible", "You" and "Home". I highly recommend this CD to anyone!

You may be asking “Who the hell is Noella Choi?” My question is “Why the hell haven’t I heard of Noella Choi before?!” Noella Choi is a multi-talented Chinese-Canadian with a love for music. On her album cover, she states that the album took two years to make, primarily because she feels she is not the most talented lyricist. I beg to differ. I think she’s an incredibly talented lyricist, not to mention an awesome composer and musician. Her lyrics are poignant and heartfelt. They’re intelligently written – no teenybopper music here. It was very amazing to discover that not only did Noella Choi write all the music on this CD, but she performed it all as well. And her voice! What a great set of pipes! She brings to mind such music superstars as Lisa Leob, Jewel, and Michelle Branch. I loved every track and found myself singing to them after a while. Each track speaks to the listener, weaving tales of love lost, measuring up, moving on, and becoming. The last track of the CD, Blossom, is a song written by Noella Choi’s father, Peter Choi, and sung by Noella Choi in her native language. Its beauty mesmerized me even before I read the English translation of the lyrics. An incredibly talented musician, composer, singer, and lyricist, Noella Choi is definitely a rising star in the making! Great debut!
author: Karen LangefeldNoella is a terrific songwriter! She writes about real life instead of made up reality that usually comes from pop singers. Her voice is refreshing and her songs are catchy! I've had her cd in my car since it arrived. I look forward to her next release.
