Album Notes

"Ravishingly melodic!"
--Ani Difranco

"and nothing is ever as sad as it seems spinning round and around with the starbreasted comic book girl of your dreams..."
--from Down Easy

Noe Venable's artistry runs strong and deep. The daughter of a writer father and a reading teacher mother, Noe grew up in San Francisco. As a small child, she made up songs, strumming along on an autoharp-- usually tunes about witches dancing around cauldrons, or about Pan and his nymphs and other characters from Greek mythology. As a high school student, she obsessed over making paper maché mermaids. As a college student, she majored in playwriting and performance. Today, as a songwriter/composer and recording artist, with four records under her belt, Noe is unique in her artistry and comfortable in her uniqueness.

Down Easy captures a particularly fiery live performance of the Noe Venable Trio at Mo's Melody Mansion in San Francisco. Recorded in 2000, before Noe and her bandmates became obsessed with electronic gadgets, Down Easy is a wholly acoustic record. Noe plays guitar and sings, Todd Sickafoose plays bass, and Alan Lin plays violin.

Down Easy was featured in the 2002 film, Cherish, by Finn Taylor. There's a scene in the film where the main character goes into a record store to buy the record.:) The title track, Down Easy, is also featured on the soundtrack to the film, which was released by Newline Records.

Tori Amos meets a snow fairy
author: Mia Andrea Jacobsen
This record really surprised me. In that good way you know, that says "what am I listening to ?" he first time you pop in the disc. This is because the cd is so quiet that it can be easily taken as a lullaby. But the more you are listening to it, the more intense it gets. In a way that makes you so addicted to it, and to the lyrics , that you dont really know how to describe it to anyone, because "fantastic" doesnt cover it. This cd has a sound which Tori Amos should envy her collegue . It has lyrics which makes you shiver and the few times Noe opens her beautiful mouth to say something, you really just want to thank God or whatever you believe in for creating such an incredible artist. Even tough she has opened up for Ani DiFrano in many shows, I think it is wrong to compare them , because their sound is so different. So I wish that CDbaby wuld compare her to the following known artists : Tori Amos, Katie Powers, Sarah Maclachlan and Jennifer Terran. So I would advise everybody who wants a CD that makes you fall in love with music all over again, enjoy it, and play it over and over and over again. And then, thanks CDbaby for existing.

A wonderful set, intimate and entrancing

This is Noe's first commercially-released LIVE recording, complete with her original star-breasted-comic-book girl-of-your-dreams drawing on the cover, the one referred to in her extraordinary song Down Easy. Since she put out this cd, her songs have evolved more, particularly Stolen Thing, one of my all-time favorite songs from ANY artist, and it's very cool to hear these earlier, still-being-worked-out versions.

Totally riveting

Quite simply this cd is worth double the price just for the track Badlands. Noe has a voice thats aesthetically perfect for this live recording. I can't recommend this cd enough. And as usual it's great to hear Todd Sickafoose playing in the band.
