Album Notes

"Santorini" captures the exotic music of Avram Pengas' NOGA GROUP, a staple of New York's downtown music scene for nearly twenty years.

The breathtaking and sultry strains of the bouzouki, guitar, oud, and clarinet, supported by dazzling percussion and bass combine to create a rich musical palette of the entire Mediterranean region.

Pulsating Greek and Turkish rhythms, Israeli pop, sinuous Arabic melodies, Latin beats, Armenian dance sounds -- all synthesized in a dynamic, improvisational style that recalls American jazz.

The arrangements are creative and progressive -- the recording made for listening as much as dancing.

The vibe is fresh and innovative -- jazzy, modern, infectious, and kinetic.

After moving my feet during the first song I had to get up and dance by the second. By the fourth song (Sagapo=I Love You) I felt like a modern Salome. Seeing Avram's Noga group live in NYC gives me the same feeling. What wonderful music by talented musicians!

Santorini is a fantastic blend of eastern Mediterranean musical traditions, and the artists in the Noga Group are clearly at the top of their game. Anyone with any interest whatsoever in the music of Greece, Turkey, Israel, and/or the Arab world should treat themselves to this one.

For some reason this CD always gets me to stay in the car for an extra 10 - 15 minutes. I guess its Mr. Pengas. The maddest speediest guitar fingers in town. Please I beg you I can't wait for the next CD, don't make me wait to long. Z.B. zbeilus@aol.com
