An interesting thing about Nomadic Attic is that it barely exists. No performances. No rehearsals. Not even a band that we know of. And yet there is music—ranging from ambient string texture to pop-lyric specificity. Some waxes archaic, some romantic, others chaotic. What begins as folk dirge might escalate to anthem, while the most grandiose in spirit is whittled down to indie-budget bones. This band, if there were a band, would easily be an up-and-comer if their music hadn't already been around awhile. So who is Nomadic Attic?
It starts with Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter Christian Lewis, the principal singer and composer on the project. To realize his songs' fullest potential, he draws on a wide range of talent. Notable musicians have included bassist Jack Beers (formerly of Above the Fold, I Like Orange), NY guitarist/mandolinist Fletch Tison (formerly of I Like Orange), Hamburg-based singer/guitarist Ted O'Toole, Boston multi-instrumentalist Jeff Perrin, singer Meredith Meyer (Young Unknowns), Brooklyn artist/drummer Rob Racine, pianist Tyson Lewis (Hopewell), drummer Patrick Spurgeon (Rogue Wave), bassist Rich Meyer (Hopewell), guitarist Sean Gibson (Above the Fold), and LA-based musician and sound engineer Bill Racine. Album art contributions include work by longtime Kingston, NY artist Joe Concra and production from NY designer Josh Fischer.
Given the constraints of oftentimes transcontinental collaboration, Nomadic Attic works slowly. The project has birthed only 15 songs in three years—including the 2012 album Pastourelle and this summer's new release, a self-titled EP. But there's no denying that the music, when it does emerge, is all heart. It's a shame most people will probably never hear it... self-promotion, like Nomadic Attic itself, is pretty scarce.
