Album Notes

"Do yourselves a favor and listen to this amazing rendition of "Eshet Chayil"…In her music there is delicacy, tenderness, and attention to the inner voice, the one that always knows before we do." Einat Barzelai, Maariv NRG

"The energy in the hall was electric, the colors spinning around everyone but above all stood out the mighty voice of Teplow...With masive vitamins of smile, with a storm-wind spirit and lots of faith, she sings from the heart, and vibrates hidden veins." Dikla D. Gal-Ed, Nashim (Women) Magazine

"[Nomi Teplow] brings with her vast experience in classical music, jazz and vocal arrangement and, above all, a voice extraordinary for its quality and its abundance of color and nuance." Itai Indik, The Observer

Gifted with a voice of rare beauty, versatility and range, Israeli soul singer Nomi Teplow sings in a variety of styles ranging from opera to rock. Nomi is a dynamic performer who reviewers have called “inspirational”, “captivating”, “bubbling”, “extraordinary.”

This is Nomi Teplow's second printing of Kumi Ori (1999), with all new graphics. In this CD, Nomi blends high quality original rock, pop, gospel and ballads with texts from Biblical sources and prayers. With arrangements and musical production by Moshe Wohl, Nomi is accompanied by Israel's top instrumentalists as well as the "Black Hebrew Soul Singers". "Everything about this album is uplifting, from the positive lyrics to her high-energy performance, to the smooth contemporary instrumentals. Nomi is a dynamic performer with an incredible vocal quality and range." (Jewish Community Newsletter on AOL) “Nomi’s music is exciting and passionate. She has an exquisite voice and is definitely someone to watch on the Jewish music scene," says Judy Caplan Ginsburgh, Cantorial Soloist and director of Jewish Entertainment Resources.

Paul Wieder writes in JUF News and Public Affairs, "There are two kinds of material on Kumi Ori (Arise, Shine). "Eshet Chayil" is the strongest track, already anthologized in American compilations. It joins "E-l Adon," "Kumi Ori," and "Zacharti Lach" as lovely cantorials, set in arrangements that showcase Nomi’s crystalline vocals, which recall the early Judy Collins.

If these songs "shine," then the rest of the songs "arise" with energy, etching a more modern groove with synthesizers and electric guitars. "Modeh Ani," and "Venatati Shalom," rock out, while "Baruch Boneh Yerushalayim" and "Adon Olam" are funk numbers. "Anu Amecha" recalls early Roseanne Cash, and "Essa Einai" evokes the upbeat sheen of Streisand in the ’80s. The album, like Nomi’s character and art, is both heartwarming and barnstorming. "

Nomi Teplow was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio and she completed both her Bachelors and Masters degrees at Columbia University (B.A. Barnard College). In 1990 Nomi decided to leave the life she knew, which included a successful, budding career as a corporate banker, and fulfill her lifelong dream of making her home in Israel.

Nomi began her musical career singing opera, show tunes and popular music. A coloratura soprano, she gave recitals and concerts throughout Israel and performed as a soloist with many of Israel's symphony and chamber orchestras. Nomi participated in several Israel Festival productions and her performances have been aired on Israeli radio and television.

Nomi has worked with leading Israeli artists such as Yoni Rechter, Shlomo Gronich, Dudu Tassa and Roi Levy and she has collaborated with American artists such as Craig Taubman, Judy Ginsburgh and Neshama Carlebach.
Several of Nomi's songs have been included in American Jewish compilation CDs (Celebrate Shabbat, Voices For Israel) and her "Eshet Chayil" is a favorite among Cantors and recording artists. Nomi's music has been published in several annual issues of Mizmor Shir, a publication of Israel’s Ministry of Education and is utilized by the Ministry in its Teacher Training Seminars. Nomi’s songs are heard on Israeli and international radio stations and she performs her music throughout Israel, bringing uplifting messages of faith and hope during these difficult times.

In addition to singing, Nomi is a choral conductor, musical director and voice teacher as well as a coach to choral conductors within the Ministry of Education. She is a popular lecturer at seminars for teachers and choral conductors and she gives vocal workshops and master classes throughout Israel.

“This is one of the few Jewish albums I'm currently listening to even when away from my store...[Nomi] is very devoted to Jewish unity and interdenominational dialogue, and I think the feel of the album reflects that....Classifying this as just another Jewish rock album would not do it justice. From arrangements to tunes to choice of text to production, this one's a winner.” Lawrence Solomon, Merkaz Judaica, Cleveland, OH

“I have never heard prayer and song with such beauty. Nomi you are wonderful! You bring passages from the Tanach and Siddur to life. I wish the whole world could experience the ancient words you bring to us in such beautiful modern song. Todah Rabah!!!” Stuart Mendel, Tucson, Arizona

"I was very impressed with her voice, her musicianship and her captivating personality. I would be happy to work with her again." Yoni Rechter, Kaveret Band (Poogy)

Nomi is very polished…The energy on stage at the Duhal Amphitheatre…[southern Tel Aviv] can light up the entire Ramat Gan [city north of Tel Aviv]." Shai Lahav, Maariv, Weekend Magazine

Nomi Teplow is a unique phenomenon on the Jewish music scene... When this soul singer gets up on stage and begins to sing, the audience is riveted with wonder for she sets a different standard, higher than anything else known to date." Roni Maimon, Besheva

“I play Nomi’s music all the time. What a musical treat! Nomi has a magnificent, superbly trained voice. Nomi’s choice of texts, her moving presentation and the unique, artistic musical arrangements make this album a spiritually uplifting experience and all-round listening pleasure!” Liora Silverstein, Israel National Radio

“Nomi’s music conveys her deep love of Judaism and an inner spirit that she shares with all through pure tones, uplifting melodies, and lively rhythms, with power and beauty that are her unique voice and bubbling personality.”
Alice Weinstein(z"l), Director, Akron Jewish Community High School, Akron, OH
