THE MANSION OF HAPPINESS, 2008* SARAH NONI METZNER*

Sarah’s music is an unlikely concoction. Grit and silk, soul and glamour, tattoos and mandolins, her work is a magic-realist mix of cabaret, blues, folk and pop. A multi-instrumentalist with a dynamic voice, she is an artist in its true form. With elements of acoustic, electric and sometimes subtle electronics, the ever-evolving dimensions of this performer exist in multitudes.

Having released 3 albums in four years, Sarah is fast becoming an integral figure on Canada’s musical landscape. In 2007, she won ‘Best Solo Artist’ at the Canadian Folk Music Awards, and was nominated for ‘Best Songwriter’ in 2006 for “Daybreak Mourning. With several Canadian and American tours under her belt, Sarah also made a significant European debut in 2007 alongside a showcase Berlin’s popkomm festival.

Originally from the west coast Sarah relocated to Toronto and recorded her newest album with producer and well loved bass player Maury Lafoy (Jann Arden, K-OS, Sarah harmer). This album also features a band of some of Canada’s most respected musicians including Kurt Swinghammer, Lori Cullen, Kevin Fox, Corwin Fox and Lyle Molzan.

The “Mansion of Happiness” is a daring exploration of depth, dichotomy and beauty. Sonically it continues to defy categorical boundaries and covers landscapes from catchy pop licks to soft folk ballads, dramatic orchestral strings to hip-hop rhythms. The title of the album is a reference to the mid-18th century board game of the same name. On a spiral pathway leading to eternal happiness or “the mansion” your fate of a spinning top dictated your destiny. As Sarah’s lyrics and music delves deep into the questioning of morality, sexuality and accepted tradition, a glimpse inside this mansion can bring magic or disillusionment, and a journey through it brings listeners to a brand new place.

The Canadian CD release tour begins in Toronto October 3rd and continues westward through November.
