Nordic formed in Portland, Oregon in September of 2001 when writer and designer Elizabeth Dye answered a "vocalist wanted" ad placed in a local newspaper. The band began playing out in early 2002, developing the layered sound they're known for. Overlapping organ and synth melodies, along with heavily shaped guitar and vocal harmonies, combined to produce a pensive pop sound that has been described as "lush, yet icy."
Nordic recorded a three-song demo in the summer of 2002, produced by Ian Parks (The Rosemarys, The Magnetic, An American Starlet). The track Honeyblind was included in the Reverb Records' Shoegazer Bliss compilation CD, released in December 2002. After a successful California tour last fall, Nordic updated its bass and drums talent, bringing in Joe Ballman and Luke Strahota. In September 2003, Nordic ventured into the studio to record the 6-song transatlantic ep, produced by Jeramy Koepping of Seattle band Voyager One. The EP will be released on Friday, April 9th, 2004.

Portland's answer to England's Stereolab

Kicking to life with a sudden drum pattern and slow bass synth, The Transatlantic EP sits in that zone for a few measures, and then, when you've settled in for the ride, pours sweet syrupy tones over top. A cross between trumpets and sustain-heavy piano, the varied degrees of synthetic tone define the album's wistful feel. It really works, and by the end of the aptly titled "Hymn," the masses should be ready to trade The Passion of the Christ for transcendental meditation.

A stark dream of washy guitars, atmospheric vocals, vespertine rhythms, and moody keys, the second release from this Portland band showcases everything that’s going right with the ever reviving concept of ‘shoegaze’ in the Northwest. Tacking their sound to the overcast Oregon sky and maintaining a crucial pop accessibility, these six people create a musical mise-en-scène with the players slowly nodding to the sounds of Slowdive, My Bloody Valentine and Spiritulaized. And their name fits; the music is as eerily beautiful as mountains in northernmost Scandinavia, backlit by midnight sun.

Awesome songs...Shows room for improvement

take this as constructive criticism. Good songs, and on those that aren't "great", they show t hat they can be done better by the musical creativity on other tracks. Good Freshman release, will be looking foward to the future on these guys. Keep an eye out.
